The MRes Cardiovascular Health and Disease course at the University of Manchester promotes cardiovascular research within a unique multi-disciplinary training environment. The programme aims to equip students with broadly based biomedical research skills, but with an emphasis on application to cardiovascular science.

Cardiovascular diseases are responsible for considerable mortality, disability and a reduced quality of life in the developed world. Despite the large number of treatment strategies, the widespread occurrence of these disorders dictates the search for improved treatments. The development of these relies on a continued evolution of our understanding of the underlying mechanisms responsible for the development of cardiovascular disorders.

It is now widely recognised by employers and research councils that unravelling the basis of cardiovascular disease and development of new therapies is a high priority area for investment especially since the economic burden of CVD is increasing. It is also recognised, however, that a gap has opened up between the skills possessed by new graduates and the skills normally expected on entry to a research degree or an industrial research career. The MRes in Cardiovascular Health and Disease has been specifically designed to fill this gap for those who wish to pursue a research career in cardiovascular sciences.


The aims of the course unit are to:

·         Provide the MRes student with a foundation knowledge of cardiovascular sciences including anatomy, physiology, and molecular biology with translation through to the clinic,

·         Develop in the MRes student the ability to learn key facts and concepts and principles of cutting-edge research techniques and to present them in a clear and concise manner.

·         Prepare students for a future career in cardiovascular sciences by acquiring the knowledge and the skills to understand concepts, formulate ideas and translate these to clinical situations. 

Learning outcomes

After completing the course unit, the MRes student will:

·         Have a broader understanding of the principles of cardiovascular sciences and the methodology used,

·         Have acquired the skills to learn new facts and concepts from an oral presentation,

·         Merge, inter-relate and apply several research disciplines and technologies to address specific research problems leading to clinical outcomes and applications


There will be 3 modules each comprised of 5 two hour lectures


Module 1:        The Vascular System (Module Coordinator Clare Austin)

Module 2:        The Heart (Module Coordinator Ashraf Kitmitto)

Module 3:        From Bench to Bedside - Therapeutic Strategies for Combating          Cardiovascular Disease (Module Coordinator Cathy Holt) 

Assessment methods

·         3 written essays. One essay per module. Assessment weightings as follows: assignment 1-33%, assignment 2-33%, assignment 3-34%


Students will be asked to select an essay title (from a list provided) relating to a subject discussed during each of the modules. Each essay should be 1500 words and written in a style similar to that for the tutorial written assignment. As a guide you should have a short abstract (e.g. 200 words) followed by an introduction to the topic, an overview of what is known, the relevance to cardiovascular research and how the area is developing (or indeed limiting factors). Other areas you may wish to discuss could include for example, the techniques involved, therapeutic strategies and the way forward in treatment provision. You should use references to support what you say.
