Postgraduate Summer Research Showcase celebrates research excellence

Current postgraduate research students, with support from the Manchester Doctoral College (MDC), organised the Postgraduate Research Showcase on Tuesday, 24 June.

This annual event provides a forum to enhance the research community across the University and offers opportunities for postgraduate researchers to practise useful skills, such as presenting and communicating ideas. “It’s a great opportunity to showcase research excellence across the University and the achievements of our researchers,” commented Claire Hughes, MDC Manager.

Postgraduate researchers from across the University were asked to provide a poster to display their research and talk through their research in more detail. 174 posters were displayed from across all Faculties.

A prize was given to the best poster in each Faculty. This year’s winners were:

  • Miriam Wilson, School of Chemistry, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences
  • David Bayliss, School of Social Sciences, Faculty of Humanities
  • Salman Hoswai, Faculty of Life Sciences
  • Rosie Griffiths, Faculty of Life Sciences
  • Hamish Hunter, Institute of Inflammation and Repair, Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences

Dame Nancy Rothwell, the University’s President and Vice Chancellor, believes events like this enable postgraduate research students to share perspectives with peers from other disciplines. “One of the things I really like is seeing students from Engineering and Physical Sciences talking to students from Social Sciences,” she said.

Postgraduate research student Naomi Billingsley highlighted the benefits of talking to academics and students from across the University. “It really makes you think about how to break your research down and explain it to a wider audience,” she explained.
