Course description

Plants lie at the base of nearly every food chain on our planet. Directly or indirectly, they provide us with all our dietary requirements and many of our raw materials for industry, clothing and leisure. Many plants are crucially important in biotechnology -providing, for example, vaccines, pharmaceuticals and even plastics. Plants are being looked to as a possible solution to climate change; crops are increasingly being grown to provide biofuels. In this context, plant sciences are more important now than ever before.

Our Plant Science course examines the growth, development and productivity of plants. To understand and exploit these processes, it is necessary to apply a wide range of biological areas, including genetics, molecular biology, biochemistry and cell biology. We offer a rich combination of seminars and interactive events; field studies are an enjoyable part of our provision. If you enter one of these degree courses, you may attend a field course on the Mediterranean island of Majorca, when the orchids are in bloom in the Easter vacation of your first year, a tropical (eg Ecuador) or UK-based field course builds on this in your second year.
