Have you ever wondered about the basic chemistry of life? Biochemistry is the chemistry of the substances and processes occurring in living cells and tissues. This subject forms the basis of virtually all of the biological sciences, and many exciting discoveries made in this area have contributed to our understanding of life, the solving of medical problems, and to the discovery and production of safe and effective drugs.
Our course at Manchester is broad in scope, with topics including: the structure of biomolecules, and how they interact in essential processes and pathways in our cells; the actions of enzymes, and how they can be inhibited by drugs; and genetic engineering and molecular biology.
You will spend your third year on a placement with one of our partner organisations in the UK or overseas.
This programme has been accredited by the Society of Biology. Accreditation is awarded to programmes that demonstrate the highest standards in the biosciences and provide graduates with the skills for academic and industry careers.
The University runs several open days per year, in which Biological Sciences take part.
We also operate campus tours, which are available most days. These are with a student ambassador who can tell you all about life at The University of Manchester. It may also be possible to meet with admissions staff (subject to staff availability). These tours are open to anybody thinking of applying to us for any of the biological and biomedical sciences. Family and friends are welcome too.
To book, please contact the Admissions Office on tel +44 (0)161 275 5032 or email email@example.com .
