Course description

Cell biologists want to understand how the cells do what they need to do, working from molecules, through whole cells, up to tissues and organs. Cell biology integrates other biological sciences, such as biochemistry and molecular biology, to explain the structure and function of cells. It also considers how cell diversity arises and how cells co-operate and communicate with each other in normal tissues and in developing embryos.

Cell biology is one of the major growth areas of biological sciences in the post-genomic era and uses new technologies, including cell culture, manipulation of genes, monoclonal antibodies and advanced light and electron microscopy. These developments support the existing and future needs of society in many areas of medicine, including cancer research, the control of autoimmune disease, and the study of birth defects; and in other fields, such as plant biotechnology and environmental monitoring.

You will spend your first year studying fundamental principles before studying more specialised topics in second and final year. The third year of this four year programme is the language placement year, during which students complete a project in a research institution in a country that speaks their chosen language. It is possible to study this programme with French, Spanish, Italian, German, Mandarin or Japanese.

This programme has been accredited by the Society of Biology and is currently the only Cell Biology course in the country to be recognised in this way. Accreditation is awarded to programmes that demonstrate the highest standards in the biosciences and provide graduates with the skills for academic and industry careers.

Fees

Tuition fees for home/EU students commencing their studies in September 2017 will be £9,250, subject to government regulations on fee increases.. Future inflationary increases will be applied to each subsequent year of the course, subject to government regulations on fee increases.
