French and Spanish [IPML]

The Integrated Professional Master in Languages (IPML) involves four years of full-time study in Manchester of two of the languages offered by the School of Languages, Linguistics and Cultures. Both languages are studied at an advanced level (post- A-level or equivalent) and the final year of study is taught and assessed at Masters level. The student's time in Manchester is combined with a minimum of two compulsory periods of residence abroad. Depending on the pathway and the residence abroad options chosen by the student, the IPML may be completed as four-, five- or six- year programme.

  French

• Studies in French will give students the opportunity to study French literature, culture, history and linguistics and give you a solid grounding in French language. It enables students to become proficient enough in French to live and work effectively in a French-speaking environment.
• Throughout the course students will be trained in modern spoken and written French by following a high level core language course. From Year One, students will discover how the language really works by learning about its morphology, syntax, phonology and phonetics.
• Students will thoroughly develop their French language skills by working with a variety of oral and written French texts and engaging in discussions in French (most of this language instruction takes place in French and is predominantly taught by native speakers).
• Core language courses at all levels of study are complemented by a variety of other French and Francophone-related topic areas, and by a period spent in a French-speaking country, which might be metropolitan France or further afield.  Independent, monitored self-study will reinforce students' knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.
• Students may also take a set of broad-based content courses designed to provide essential grounding in key areas of French culture (especially visual studies), literature, history, society and linguistics.  Some of the content teaching on these courses, in the first and subsequent years, is in English, so that students can focus fully on the new concepts introduced to them and can hone not only their French language skills, but also their expression and accuracy in English.

Spanish

• The course gives students a thorough grounding in the language and culture of the Spanish-speaking world.
• The course immerses students in Spanish language and Hispanic culture. It also provides in-depth knowledge on Latin America and the opportunity to learn Catalan.
