Discover Neuroscience Day - 7 December 2010
Have you ever wondered . . . about anything?
If you have ‘wondered’ then this is just another demonstration of the amazing wonder that is your brain, the most complex thing on the planet. The brain controls everything we do or think and makes us what we are. As such, Neuroscience, the study of the brain and the nervous system, is one of the most exciting areas of scientific research, mainly because there are still so many unanswered questions as to how the brain works and why it goes wrong in disease.
On our Discover Neuroscience Day you will find out more about the Neuroscience degree at Manchester, the types of career available to you as a Neuroscience graduate and the cutting-edge research going on right now in our labs.
You will get the chance to do some hands-on neuroscience which will include:
- Seeing your own brainwaves using electroencephalography (EEG);
- Dissecting a real brain to learn about its structure and function.
Please note that these experiments will involve the use of animal tissue.

|10am||Introduction to the Neuroscience degree and neuroscience careers (Dr Stuart Allan)|
|10.30am-12pm||Brainwaves: EEG, EOG and EMG (Dr Fred Cody)|
|12pm-1.30pm||Lunch and campus tour with current students|
|1.30pm-2.45pm||Brain dissection (Dr Stuart Allan, Dr Natalie Gardiner, Dr Catherine Lawrence)|
|3pm-3.30pm||Frontiers of Science – Research lecture (Dr Natalie Gardiner, Dr Catherine Lawrence)|
Please note that due to limited capacity, learners will, in the first instance, only be allocated a place on either the Microbiology or the Neuroscience event. If you sign up to both events, you will be allocated a place on one or the other according to availability, and only both if spaces are available after the booking deadline. If you have a strong preference for one event, please only a sign up for that one. Both events will provide a general insight into studying Life Sciences at Manchester, with a certain degree of overlap in this regard between the two.
