Meeting adult learners
The Burlington Society is The University of Manchester's society for adult learners and postgraduate students. The Burlington Society have their own facilities in the Burlington Rooms, next to the John Rylands University Library, on the Oxford Road side of our main campus. Facilities include a bar, a quiet common room (with free tea and coffee facilities for members) and a vegetarian cafe. The society organises events and activities on Thursday and Friday evenings during term time. In addition there are smaller groups for theatre and film visits, music, football, squash and others.
Smaller local networks of mature students have been successfully set up in some schools at the University, and have even secured representation on staff-student committees. Currently there are approximately 4,000 mature students at The University of Manchester; this is 12% of the total student population.
