University of Manchester scholarships and bursaries

As one the country’s leading centres of research and learning, The University of Manchester is committed to attracting and supporting the very best students. If you have the talent and ability, we want to make sure that you have the opportunity to study here regardless of your financial circumstances.

More than a third of our students will receive bursaries of up to £3,000 per year and many will be offered even more generous support.

Students who are eligible will be able to choose how they receive this support – either as a cash bursary or as discount on their fees or accommodation bill.

UK students are not required to submit an application for any of the University’s means-tested awards. We will automatically identify eligible students on the basis of the household income data provided by the Student Loans Company.

The Manchester Bursary

The Manchester Bursary is available to any student who is registered on an eligible* undergraduate degree course at The University of Manchester and who has had a full financial assessment carried out by Student Finance. This bursary is additional to the government package of maintenance grants.

*Some students on NHS-funded programmes will not be able to access these awards due to their eligibility for NHS support. Students who hold a previous undergraduate degree will be considered for the Manchester Bursary in the same way as students undertaking a degree for the first time.

Up to £25,000 £3,000 in Year 1 £1,000 cash bursary and £2,000 fee or accommodation discount
£2,500 in subsequent years £2,500 cash bursary, £2,500 fee discount, or a split between them
£25,001 to £35,000 £1,000 each year £1,000 cash bursary

Students who opt to receive an accommodation discount can expect their instalments from January onwards to be reduced accordingly.

Students who opt to receive a tuition fee discount should still apply for the full amount of tuition fee loan from Student Finance. During the academic year we will notify Student Finance of the change in fee and the loan amount will be adjusted accordingly.

All cash bursaries will be paid in three instalments: 25% in December, 50% in February and 25% in April.

EU students are able to qualify for the fee discount element of the Manchester Bursary but will not have the option of an accommodation discount and will not receive a cash bursary. EU students who feel that their household income is less than £25,000 will need to request a financial assessment. They can do so by contacting funding@manchester.ac.uk.

National Scholarship Programme

The University of Manchester has decided that awards funded through the National Scholarship Programme will be identical in length, value and criteria to its own Manchester Bursary. As such, some students who are to be awarded the Manchester Bursary will be funded through the National Scholarship programme for Year 1 only. The National Scholarship Programme is being introduced in 2012 to help students from lower income backgrounds to go to university. It will provide students with a household income of less than £25,000 with £3,000 in support.

The University is also investing in support for other specified students as follows:

Foundation Year Bursaries

The University of Manchester is also offering generous financial support worth up to £5,000 for students enrolling in its foundation 'Year 0' programmes in Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Life Sciences, Science and Engineering. With the aim of facilitating progression directly onto the relevant undergraduate course, these one-year programmes are designed to attract students who are from diverse educational backgrounds or who have unsuitable qualifications.

Opportunity Manchester Scholarships

Opportunity Manchester Scholarships of £1,000 per year will be awarded to students meeting either of the following criteria:

These awards are generously supported by our alumni community.

Fee discounts for year abroad/year in industry

We want to encourage students to take up opportunities to spend a year abroad or in structured industry placements. We will therefore charge less than the standard half fee of £4,500 for students taking up such opportunities and offer to waive or significantly discount this fee for students from less well-off backgrounds.

In addition, students will be able to qualify for a cash bursary equivalent to 50% of the standard rate available under the terms of the Manchester Bursary scheme. Students on paid industrial placements will not be eligible to receive the cash bursaries and additional support awarded on the basis of residual household income.
