The result places Manchester at the top of a global field of 1,603 universities from 114 countries and territories. It is also the eighth consecutive year that the University has ranked in the global top ten, making it the only institution to achieve that distinction since the rankings were launched in 2019. 

The THE Sustainability Impact Ratings assess how universities are helping to address major global challenges through their research, teaching, operations and partnerships, measured against the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals. 

Manchester is one of the few elite global universities (40^th in the QS World University Rankings 2027) to also consistently rank in the top ten in both the THE Sustainability Impact Ratings (formally known as the THE Impact Rankings) and QS World Sustainability Rankings. This demonstrates not only the high standard of teaching and research at Manchester, but its positive impact on the world’s most pressing issues. 

This year, the University ranked first for Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9), which has been a key focus through initiatives like Unit M and the University of Manchester Innovation Factory, which propel spinouts and patented work. And our research platforms, Digital Futures, Healthier Futures, Sustainable Futures and Creative Manchester, bring together people, ideas and infrastructure to boost civic engagement and societal impact.  

The University also ranked first individually for Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), Life Below Water (SDG 14) and Life on Land (SDG 15), in recognition of the many projects across the University focused on these areas. 

As of September 2025, the University has supported the development of a major new solar farm, meaning 65% of its electricity demand will be matched from this renewable source - halving the University’s electricity carbon footprint. The University’s target is to reach zero direct carbon emissions by 2038. 

The interdisciplinary work of the Global Development Institute on projects such as  Sustainable Forest Transitions, Just Observation for Conservation and the African Cities Research Consortium are based on international research partnerships addressing some of the world’s greatest development challenges.  

And its commitment to social responsibility, public and civic engagement is evidenced through four world-leading cultural institutions, commitment to co-creation through citizen and patient panels and engagement programmes such as the UNESCO Great Science Share for Schools and Universally Manchester Festival.

The rankings assess more than 1,500 institutions worldwide across a range of measures, including research and discovery, employability and outcomes, international engagement and sustainability.   

Manchester achieved an overall score of 84.6 and performed particularly strongly in international research collaboration, ranking 7th globally. The University also ranked 10th for sustainability, 28th for employer reputation and 32nd for academic reputation.   

The results reinforce Manchester's position as one of the world's leading universities, recognised for the quality of its research, global partnerships, teaching excellence and real-world impact.  

Manchester is also one of a small number of global universities that consistently performs strongly in both the global university rankings and the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, which measure progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Since these rankings were introduced in 2019, the University has been placed in the global top ten every year. 

The University was ranked 35th in the QS World University Rankings 2026. This year's rankings saw particularly strong competition from institutions in China and across Asia, reflecting the intensely competitive global higher education landscape.  

QS is one of the world's leading university ranking systems. The University of Manchester was ranked 56th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026 and 46th in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2025.

The research, conducted by High Fliers, placed Manchester first followed by Birmingham, Nottingham, Warwick and University College London. Manchester formerly placed second in the rankings in the report’s 2025 edition. 

Manchester has reclaimed the top spot, reaffirming its position as the most highly targeted university by the UK’s leading graduate employers in an increasingly competitive market. 

The Graduate Market is an annual review of the graduate job market, with this year’s report based on research completed in December 2025 with 100 of the UK’s leading graduate employers.  

Researchers identified the top five institutions which attract the most top graduate employers to university careers fairs, on-campus employers’ presentations, careers service promotions and other locally-run publicity throughout 2025-2026.  

On average, the number of universities targeted by employers averaged around 23 in the latest academic year. This ranking demonstrates how Manchester graduates remain a priority target for employers in the face of a challenging graduate job market. 

The top 100 employers reduced graduate hiring again in 2025 (–5.1%) and are forecasting a further slight dip in 2026 (–0.5%), bringing vacancies to their lowest level since 2012.

The University of Manchester places consistently in the top 100 of world universities across a number of rankings, most recently placing ninth in the QS World University Rankings: Europe 2026. In the QS Rankings for Employability, The University of Manchester ranks fourth for Employment Outcomes and third place for Employer Reputation in the Russell Group.

Manchester was also recognised among the top 100 globally across 10 subject areas in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026 by Subject.

The result marks the third consecutive year the University has secured a spot in the European Top 10 since the ranking’s launch in 2023.

The QS Europe ranking evaluates institutions using performance indicators, including academic and employer reputation, citations, research output, employability outcomes, international research collaboration, student diversity and sustainability.

The 2026 edition features 958 institutions across 42 locations, including 129 from the UK. UK universities continue to perform strongly across reputation and research metrics, with seven institutions ranked in the top 10 for Academic Reputation and six in the top 10 for Employer Reputation.

Sowter added: “Europe’s higher education sector remains a strong, underpinned by world-class research universities, strong international collaboration, and growing momentum behind transnational alliances and joint degrees. Cross-border mobility remains a defining strength. However, funding and research capacity vary widely between national systems, contributing to uneven performance and talent retention. At the same time, universities face mounting pressure to sustain research excellence, deepen industry engagement, and modernise governance and delivery models amid funding deficits and tightening policy around international mobility.”

In global rankings, The University of Manchester ranks 8 in the UK and 56 in the world in the THE World University Rankings for 2026. The prestigious rankings evaluate more than 2,000 institutions from 115 countries and territories. The University ranked in the top 50 globally for four subjects, including Arts & Humanities (41), Business & Economics (41) and Social Sciences (32). The University received its highest ranking for Engineering, taking 5^th place in the UK ranking and 48^th globally.

The University saw its ranking improve in 3 subjects compared to the previous rankings, including Social Sciences (by 5 to 32), Arts & Humanities (by 2 to 41) and Physical Sciences (by 4 to 51).

The THE subject rankings cover 148 individual disciplines under broad subject areas. The methodology judges universities based on five core pillars of evaluation: teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry.

In the QS World University Rankings 2026, The University of Manchester ranks 7^th in the UK and 35^th in the world, while the University also ranks first in the UK and second in the world in the THE Impact Rankings.

Highly Cited Researchers demonstrate significant and broad influence across their fields of research and have authored multiple ‘Highly Cited’ papers. These papers proudly rank in the top one percent by citations for their field and publication year in the Web of Science over the past eleven years.

Celebrating researchers’ impact, the list includes 11 entries for academics primarily affiliated with The University of Manchester (with a double entry for Professor Zhiguo Ding in the fields of both Computer Science and Engineering).

The 2025 list includes Professors Pamela Qualter, Dave Singh and Adisa Azapagic for the first time.

Professor Pierluigi Mancarella and Professor Sir Konstantin S. Novoselov, both secondarily affiliated with The University of Manchester, also made this year’s list, earning the University 13 mentions overall in the 2025 rankings.

The rankings are built on rigorous citation analysis and refined by expert judgement, quantitative metrics and qualitative analysis.

With an overall score of 98 out of 100, Manchester is now 10^th globally and 5^th in the UK in recognition of its ability to tackle the world’s greatest environmental, social and governance (ESG) challenges - a shift from 9^th and 4^th respectively last year.

The University remains the only university in the world to feature in the top 10 of both the QS Sustainability Rankings and the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings.

Now in the fourth year, this year’s QS assessment is its most comprehensive yet, evaluating 2,002 universities, compared with 1,745 in 2024. It assesses Universities’ commitment to sustainability, evaluating them on everything from the impact that alumni are making in science and technology to solve climate issues, to the impact of research being done across the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). It evaluates the social and environmental impact of universities as a centres of education and research, as well as a major employers with the operational sustainability challenges of any large and complex organisation.

The University of Manchester has placed social responsibility as one of five foundations in its new strategy From Manchester for the world, and as one of the world’s leading research institutions, the University is driving global change through groundbreaking research, teaching, community engagement and responsible campus operations.

In the past five years alone, Manchester academics have produced more than 21,500 SDG-related research publications, accounting for 4% of all UK research on the goals.

Through teaching, students are empowered to address global challenges through accessible education, the Stellify programme and curriculum-embedded social responsibility opportunities.

The University holds a prestigious Platinum Watermark for excellence in public engagement and its work with cultural institutions including Manchester Museum, the Whitworth, Jodrell Bank Discovery Centre and the John Rylands Research Institute and Library, aims involve and inspire local and global communities with the SDGs.

Meanwhile, its campus operations continue these values, from being a living wage employer and a leader in equality standards to its commitment to reach zero carbon by 2038.

Earlier this year, the University begun powering its campus with clean, renewable electricity from a major new solar farm, which means that up to 65% of the University’s electricity demand will now be met from exclusive ‘new-to-earth’ renewable infrastructure. The annual list identifies the world’s most-cited researchers, offering an overview of the impact and influence of their work. This year, 551 Manchester academics feature in the rankings, underscoring the University’s leading international research presence.

The data reveals the breadth of Manchester’s research impact, with scholars contributing to diverse and interdisciplinary fields such as advanced materials, social sciences, global health, ecology, and physics.

The Stanford/Elsevier Top 2% Scientist Rankings draw on data from Elsevier’s Scopus database, incorporating citations up to the end of 2024. The rankings evaluate researchers using a range of metrics, including, co-authorship-adjusted citations and a composite citation score— providing a measure of influence beyond publication volume alone.

Developed by data scientists at Elsevier’s ICSR Lab in collaboration with Stanford University, the list—now in its eighth edition—has become one of the most respected indicators of research excellence worldwide.

The University has retained its spot as 8^th in the UK this year, while dropping three places in the overall global ranking. The university's overall score for teaching and industry also improved when compared to the 2024 ranking. 

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings measure research-intensive universities across all their core missions.

Research conducted by High Fliers, published via The Graduate Market In 2025, ranked Manchester second only to Birmingham, and ahead of Nottingham, Warwick and Bristol.

Now in its 21^st year, The Graduate Market is an annual review of the graduate job market, with this year’s report based on research completed in July 2025 with 100 of the UK’s leading graduate employers. The University of Manchester has maintained its second-place ranking from the previous year.

The report cited how the top five universities attracted the most graduate employers in 2024-2025 for locally-run publicity, university career fairs, on-campus employer presentations, careers service promotions, on-campus presentations and university-specific virtual events.

The University of Manchester is consistently ranked highly in national and international rankings, scoring second in the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings for 2025 and 53^rd in THE’s overall list.

The University rose this year to 46^th globally and 13^th in Europe in the 2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). It also ranked 35^th in the world and 11^th in Europe in the QS World University Rankings, and 9^th in the QS World University Sustainability Rankings.

“For an institution of our scale and ambition, continued progress on the global stage is both a challenge and an opportunity," Duncan added.

The 2025 ARWU result follows a strong year for Manchester in other leading global rankings - in June, it was named the 35th best university in the world in the QS World University Rankings.

The power of the University’s social and environmental impact has also been recognised on a global scale, being the only university in the top ten in both the QS World University Sustainability Rankings and Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, in recognition of its contribution towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The University’s research strength is further evidenced by the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), in which 93% of research activity was rated either ‘world-leading’ (4*) or ‘internationally excellent’ (3*).

The University’s unique commitment to addressing the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is world leading. Manchester is the only university in the world to rank in the top ten for social and environmental impact in all seven years of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. 

The 17 SDGs are the world’s call to action on the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing humanity and the natural world, and The University of Manchester’s consistent top ranking is recognition of its leading role in tackling them. 

In this year’s assessment, more universities than ever were ranked with 2,318 institutions from 130 countries being ranked against how they are addressing the most pressing challenges facing our planet.  

The ranking, is the world’s only one that measures universities’ contributions to the UN SDGs and assesses their commitment to sustainability across four broad areas: research, stewardship, outreach and teaching. 

Dr Julian Skyrme, Executive Director of Social Responsibility and Civic Engagement at The University of Manchester, who leads the institution’s entry to the ranking, said: “Each year, we submit a wealth of evidence demonstrating how we embed social responsibility across all areas of our work—from sustainability and cultural engagement to research impact, widening participation and the student experience. This continued recognition highlights the dedication of our entire University community to making a positive difference locally and globally.” 

The University of Manchester came top in the world for SDG11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities. Significantly contributing to this is the investment made in four public-facing cultural institutions. Manchester Museum has recently been recognised as one of Europe’s leading museums after winning the European Museum of the Year Award (EMYA) 2025.  

The annual prize is one of the most prestigious museum awards in the world and Manchester Museum is the first university museum to receive it, earning recognition for the way it balances globally-significant academic research with community engagement and social responsibility.  

The University has also directly addressed the energy impact of its campus in a landmark deal to see up to 65% of its electricity demand supplied via a new renewable project. In support of SDG7 – Affordable and Clean Energy and SDG12 – Responsible Consumption and Production, the University is building a 104,000 solar panel farm to generate green energy and also create a significant biodiversity enhancement to previously low-grade farmland. 

The University was ranked second in the world for SDG15 – Life on Land. Particularly key contributions towards this goal have come from Professor Rich Bardgett for his climate research on restoring grasslands in the UN’s Decade on Ecosystem Restoration initiative. Alongside this is Dr Johan Oldekop’s leading research on socially driven reforestation policies to better protect our environment.

The University of Manchester has also, this week, been ranked 35th in the annual QS World University Rankings which evaluate over 8,000 institutions around the world. The University of Manchester has been ranked in the top 40 in the broad subject rankings in this year's measurements. Four out of five broad subjects fell from last year’s position, while Natural Sciences showed resilience, improving by two places to 31 globally.  

The University’s Nursing and Petroleum Engineering courses both earned their places in the top 10 globally as significant areas of impact among the ranked subjects. Meanwhile, Manchester School of Architecture, a collaboration between The University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), also held on to its spot as the fifth best architecture school in the world.

The QS World Subject Rankings highlight the world’s top performing universities across 55 narrow subjects and five broad subject areas. The rankings are a key measure of global success for higher education and in 2025 involved an analysis of the reputation and research output of over 5,200 institutions.

Published annually, the QS World Subject Rankings are compiled according to academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact and help prospective students to identify leading universities in particular subjects. 

The University of Manchester is also ranked at number 34 in the world in the 2025 QS World University Rankings and is in the top ten globally in the 2025 QS World Sustainability Rankings, placing at number 9.

The prestigious ranking of 300 universities is decided based on the judgement of senior academics in the world’s largest invitation-only academic opinion survey. Reputation is assessed based on three core pillars of evaluation: vote counts, pairwise comparison and voter diversity, with all three considered in relation to research and teaching. 

The University of Manchester’s position has improved since the reputation rankings were last published in 2023, and it is one of eight UK institutions included in the top 50.

The University of Manchester was placed 53^rd in the THE World University Rankings 2025 (and 8^th in the UK), while the University’s commitment to academic excellence in research and teaching across all subject areas was also recognised in the THE World University Rankings by Subject. 

Revealed today, The University ranks in the top 50 globally for five subject areas: Social Sciences, Business Economics, Engineering, Arts and Humanities and Medical and Health, with the strongest performance in Business Economics (32^nd) and Social Sciences (37^th).  

The University also featured in the top 100 worldwide for all 11 subject areas which are assessed, an achievement only shared by 7 other UK institutions. Among the six subject areas not yet in the top 50 there were significant climbs in the rankings for Computer Science and Law. 

This ranking uses key performance indicators to measure 5 core pillars of evaluation; teaching, research environment, research quality, industry partnerships and international outlook.

The THE Subject Rankings are one of three major international subject ranking exercises that the University tracks to benchmark its performance. In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, the University ranked in the top 35 globally for each of the five broad subject groups – Arts and Humanities (27), Engineering and Technology (27), Life Science and Medicine (30), Natural Sciences (33), Social Sciences and Management (28). 

In the 2024 Shanghai Rankings’ Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (AWRU), the University was placed among the top 25 worldwide in seven of 46 subjects, ranked first in the UK for four subjects and moved up in 21 subjects thanks to our research excellence and impact. 

With an overall score of 98.3 out of 100—an improvement from last year’s 98.0—the University ranks 9th out of 1,751 institutions, placing it within the top 1% of universities globally. This achievement builds on Manchester’s reputation as the only university in the world to feature in the top 10 in both the QS Sustainability Rankings and the 2024 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, which measure progress towards the vitally important UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

The UK has 26 universities in the top 100 globally and more top 10 universities than any other country or territory. 

The QS Sustainability Rankings were launched in 2022, these rankings evaluate ESG performance through research, teaching, public engagement, and university operations, using data from policies, case studies, staff and alumni surveys, and research outputs. 

The University’s strong position reflects the commitment to ongoing research excellence and the contributions of highly-cited researchers working towards the SDGs in areas such as the Manchester Environmental Research Institute, the Global Development Institute and the Sustainable Consumption Institute. 

The University was able to demonstrate its commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion through policies like the Dignity at Work and Study Policy and its ambitious 2038 Decarbonisation Plan, which includes a landmark deal to build a solar farm with 104,000 panels supplying 65% of the University’s electricity. 

In teaching evaluations, our taught programmes have been recognised as highly valuable, such as the MSc in Climate Change, delivered by the School of Environment, Education and Development, to equip students to address climate and nature crises. 

The University’s public engagement programmes, such as the award-winning Poverty Matters programme which engages communities to tackle pressing social issues like child poverty, contribute highly to the institution’s positive societal impact. Last year the University was also awarded a Platinum Watermark award by the National Co-ordinating Centre for Public Engagement (NCCPE), which recognises universities’ engagement with the public. Manchester is only the second university to be successful in achieving the Platinum award.

The University is ranked in the top 25 globally for a broad range of subjects including; Business Administration (5th), Geography (9th), Physics (10th), Sociology (11th), Dentistry & Oral Sciences (15th), Textile Science and Engineering (19th), and Metallurgical Engineering (23rd). Two other subject areas leapt into the top 50: Biotechnology (36th) and Political Sciences (48th).

The University is top among UK institutions for Business Administration, Metallurgical Engineering, Biotechnology and textile Science and Engineering.

The University’s subject ranking has improved on its position in 2023. The University is now ranked in 46 of the 55 subject areas covered by the AWRU, which encompass fields within Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. The University moved up the rankings in 21 subject areas, held its 2023 position in 9 and entered the rankings in two other subject areas for the first time (Library and Information Management in the 51-75 band, Communication in the 151-200 band).

The rankings are determined by metrics for five categories: World-Class Faculty (newly introduced this year), World-Class Output, High Quality Research, Research Impact, and International Collaboration. These results underscore The University of Manchester’s research quality and impact, highlighting subject areas of strength in this global ranking. It follows the earlier announcement that The University of Manchester was ranked 52nd overall in the world out of more than 2500 of the leading higher education institutions in the 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

The rankings are developed based on responses to questionnaires sent to the world’s leading academics and take into account these senior figures’ opinions. They assess research-intensive universities across 18 performance indicators, which are divided into five pillars covering their core missions of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and internationalisation.    

The University - one of only twelve UK Universities in the top 100 - fell slightly from 51^st place in 2023. Manchester is also ranked the 6^th best university in the UK and 52^nd in the world in the Academic Ranking of World Universities, with the University’s social and environmental impact ranked in the top ten globally (Times Higher Education Impact Rankings).  

The last 12 months have seen a raft of major developments and initiatives at Manchester. The University has marked its bicentenary with a huge number of events across campus celebrating 200 years of learning, innovation and research. Unit M, a new capability to drive the University’s approach to innovation, was launched at the World Academic Summit. Staff, students, alumni and partners are currently participating in Manchester 2035, the University’s bold new strategy for the next decade.

The KEF provides information about the broad ranging knowledge exchange activities of English HE Providers, such as the way universities work with external partners, from businesses to community groups, for the benefit of the economy and society. 

The University of Manchester supports the full range of knowledge exchange activities through public engagement, supporting businesses and commercialising research towards next generation technologies. Students, staff, partners and local communities all play a key role in ensuring that the University makes a positive societal and economic impact. 

The KEF allows universities to better understand their own performance and fosters a culture of continuous improvement. HE Providers are placed into a cluster of peers, grouping together universities of similar types, with The University of Manchester placed in a group of 18 large, research-intensive universities including Oxford and Imperial. 

Manchester’s performance in continuous professional development and Graduate Startups, which is supported by the work of the Masood Entrepreneurship Centre and Executive Education at Alliance Manchester Business School, received an enhanced rating of high engagement in KEF4, and Manchester now sits above the cluster group average.  

Manchester also continues to receive the highest rating for Research Partnerships, where the University is placed above the cluster group average. This recognises the work of the University’s Business Engagement and Knowledge Exchange team.  

The excellent performance of the University’s Innovation Factory in licensing, IP income, investment and turnover of spinouts continues to be recognised with the highest rating in IP and Commercialisation. 

The University also received the highest rating for Public Engagement, and includes our achievements in volunteering, festivals, citizen science, and engagement with communities through our cultural institutions, Jodrell Bank, John Rylands Research Institute and Library, Manchester Museum, and the Whitworth Art Gallery.

The annual rankings see The University of Manchester retain its top ten status as the 6th best institution in the UK and 15th in Europe, according to the ARWU. However, the University has slipped from 41 to 52 globally.

This year, more than 2500 institutions were scrutinised, and the best 1000 universities in the world are published. Overall, The United Kingdom has 63 Top 1000 universities, and 38 of them are listed in the Top 500, 8 are listed in the Top 100.

Starting from 2003, ARWU has been presenting the world's top universities annually based on a set of objective indicators and third-party data.  

Universities are ranked by several academic or research performance indicators, including alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, Highly Cited Researchers, papers published in Nature and Science, papers indexed in major citation indices, and the per capita academic performance of an institution. 

This latest ARWU ranking follows on from The University of Manchester named as the world's 34th best University according to the newest QS World University Rankings, published in June this year. 

Manchester was also named top in both the UK and Europe, and second in the world for meaningful contributions towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings.  

In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) an impressive 93% of our research activity was rated 'world-leading' (4*) or 'internationally excellent' (3*), confirming Manchester as one of the UK's top research institutions.

With a unique commitment to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals, The University of Manchester is the only institution in the world to rank in the top ten for social and environmental impact in every year of the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. 

Manchester’s top ranking comes from a record assessment of 2,152 universities from 125 countries and regions, which is 26 per cent increase on last year where 1,705 universities were ranked. This year 72 UK universities participated in the ranking, 11 more than last year (61). 

The ranking, now in its sixth year, is the world’s only one that measures universities’ contributions to the United Nations' (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and assesses their commitment to sustainability across four broad areas: research, stewardship, outreach and teaching 

Dr Julian Skyrme, Director of Social Responsibility and Civic Engagement at The University of Manchester, who leads the institution’s entry to the ranking, said: “Each year we submit over 300 pieces of evidence for this ranking covering our cultural institutions, sustainability, equality, diversity and inclusion, widening access, research impact, public and civic engagement, external partnerships, innovation, the student experience and reporting on the SDGs. Everyone in our University community should be proud of this independent measure of our commitment to social responsibility.” 

The University of Manchester came top in the world for SDG11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities. Initiatives supporting this include the Platinum Watermark for Public Engagement, the investment made in four public-facing cultural institutions and Creative Manchester initiative, a commitment to sustainable travel and world-leading research across all three Faculties into the effects of air pollution on health. 

The University was also ranked first in the world for SDG15 – Life on Land. Initiatives supporting this included research by the Manchester Institute for Biotechnology into soil microbial diversity, work to enhance and map our nature on campus and the commitment the University places on sustainable food procurement. 

Other areas where the University was shown to be a world leader include research impact towards SDG9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; the number of patents citing university research; the number of university spin-outs; the quality of the University’s SDG reporting; and on the commitment to educational for sustainable development through the School of Health Science’s free Public Health MOOC and interdisciplinary UCIL course unit on the SDGs.

The latest news shows how the University’s work across research, teaching, and social responsibility is impacting progress and society around the world and changing people’s lives for the better. 

QS, which also publishes the globally influential QS World University Rankings, launched the Sustainability Rankings in 2022. The ranking draws on evidence such as policies and case studies, and sources such as staff and alumni surveys and research data. More than 1,400 universities from 95 countries are assessed on environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria. 

Dr Julian Skyrme, Manchester’s, Director of Social Responsibility, who led the submission to the ranking, said: “This ranking by QS uses a wide range of unique evidence points drawing on our research, teaching, public engagement and university operations. A remarkably similar picture has emerged to that found in the THE Impact Ranking, where we are also top in Europe. This success reflects the impact that thousands of our staff, students, alumni and external partners make to improve our world and should be a source of pride for our whole community.” 

At Manchester, many of these efforts are focused on working towards the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  

In research this includes Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation. In one example of this, as part of a joint India-UK water quality project, a team of Manchester researchers carried out ground-breaking work on arsenic exposure in India. Arsenic-contaminated groundwater used for drinking and crop irrigation poses a serious health risk, and this research established the extent of exposure and how this toxic metal enters well water.  

University research was also highly rated by QS against Goals 1 (No poverty), 2 (Zero hunger), and 3 (Good health & wellbeing). 

For evidence for its work around teaching, Manchester submitted examples of its commitment to the SDGs through the University College for Interdisciplinary Learning where students from any degree can take additional short courses to boost their employability or personal development. This can include setting up a business or creating a sustainable future.  

On public engagement, the University shared evidence from its museums, galleries and libraries and how it involves local citizens in decision-making through a Civic Panel.  

And evidence on University operations included work to decarbonise the campus, supporting good health and wellbeing and a commitment to fostering equality, diversity and inclusion.

It means that we have thousands of inspiring people coming up with ideas and making a difference through their work and study every day. In the latest rankings unveiled by THE, The University of Manchester's global standing continues to grow, underscoring the ongoing dedication and efforts of the students, faculty, and staff, who play a pivotal role in advancing our research and educational endeavours.

According to the 20^th edition of the prestigious ranking, the University maintains its eighth placed position in the United Kingdom, with the key measurement of International Outlook being a success story.

The University earned an overall score of 75.6, calculated based on 18 carefully calibrated performance indicators that assess an institution's performance across four key areas: teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and international outlook, as outlined on the in THE’s 2024 methodology.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings for 2024 encompass a total of 1,904 universities from across the globe.

This month also saw global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds release its first Europe-wide ranking, the only significant regional ranking of European universities. The results saw The University of Manchester place eighth in Europe and sixth in United Kingdom.

Global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds has today released its first Europe-wide ranking, the only significant regional ranking of European universities. The results see The University of Manchester place eighth in Europe and sixth in United Kingdom.

The inaugural ranking measures a total of 690 institutions across 42 locations in Europe, with 107 HE organisations coming from the UK.

QS has previously ranked the University 42 in the world for graduate employability. In the UK, we're the most targeted university by the nation's top graduate employers (The Graduate Market, 2023).

THE Impact Rankings 2023: overall top 10  

The prestigious QS World University Rankings highlight the world’s top performing universities in 54 individual subject areas. They include almost 1,500 institutions from around the world, with rankings based on subjects, destination and graduate employability, and allowing prospective students to compare the top universities for architecture globally.

MSA’s ‘unparalleled’ opportunities for collaborative architectural research across the two universities were highlighted, as was its ‘wide range of interdisciplinary research and teaching interests’ within Manchester School of Art at Manchester Metropolitan University and departments at The University of Manchester.

Its employer reputation scored a near-perfect 98.4%, maintaining its position at second overall, with citations per research paper hitting the heights at 95%, and an impressive overall score of 89.3%.

MSA unites two schools with more than 100 years’ experience, over 100 experts in their architectural fields and more than 1,000 students from over 80 countries, producing creative, challenging and academically rigorous work and research.

It offers a range of professionally recognised undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees, and has gained a prestigious reputation following appraisals by professional bodies such as the Architects’ Registration Board (ARB), Royal Institute for British Architects (RIBA) and The Landscape Institute, alongside a number of prizes gained externally.

Stonewall is Europe’s largest charity for lesbian, gay, bi, trans, queer, questioning and ace (LGBTQ+) people and each year ranks organisations for their LGBTQ+ inclusion practices against other organisations.

The University of Manchester scored 113 out of 200 in its Workplace Equality Index submission. Ranking in 30^th overall, the University also achieved a Gold award for meeting specific criteria around a number of identified measures for LGBT+ inclusion.

In addition to this, the University has been awarded a Highly Commended Network Group award, to celebrate the achievements of its LGBTQ+ network group, ALLOUT. The network is fully inclusive and welcomes all lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and non-binary staff as well as anyone who may have an interest or wish to support colleagues, friends and relatives. 

ALLOUT organises awareness-raising events throughout the year, works with the University on policy development and review, and runs the successful Allies programme which provides training to staff who do not identify as LGBTQ+ but wish to support their colleagues. The network co-chairs are Dominic Bilton, Megan Johnston and James Lea.

The University uses benchmarking tools as part of its inclusion performance metrics, and taking part in the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index has supported this. The submission is compiled by Lead Equality Diversity and Inclusion Partner, Paul Marks-Jones, who also coordinates the University’s staff networks. To be included in the prestigious Top 200 of the world’s most important higher education institutions is a significant achievement.  THE’s World Reputation Rankings employ the world’s largest invitation-only academic opinion survey to provide the definitive list of the Top 200 most powerful global university brands, based on the judgement of senior academics – the people best placed to know the most about excellence in the world’s universities.

The 2022 rankings are based on a survey carried out between November 2021 and February 2022, which received a total of 29,606 responses from 159 countries.

Earlier this year, Manchester was also named 5th place for research power - the quality and scale of research and impact - in the UK government’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, the major national exercise to evaluate research activity, which was last held in 2014.

In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF) an impressive 93% of our research activity was rated 'world-leading' (4*) or 'internationally excellent' (3*), confirming Manchester as one of the UK's top research institutions. Manchester made one of the largest and broadest REF submissions in the UK, entering 2,249 eligible researchers across 31 subject areas.

The annual rankings see Manchester retain its top ten status as the 6th best institution in the UK and 8th in Europe, according to the ARWU.

This year, more than 2500 institutions were scrutinized, and the best 1000 universities in the world are published. Overall, The United Kingdom has 63 Top 1000 universities, and 38 of them are listed in the Top 500, 8 are listed in the Top 100.

Starting from 2003, ARWU has been presenting the world's top universities annually based on a set of objective indicators and third-party data. ARWU adopts six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, the number of Highly Cited Researchers and articles indexed in Science Citation Index - Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index based on data in the Web of Science, and per capita performance.

This latest ARWU ranking success follows on from Manchester named the world's 28th best University according to the newest QS World University Rankings, published in June this year.

Earlier this year, Manchester was also named 5th place for research power - the quality and scale of research and impact - in the UK government’s Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, the major national exercise to evaluate research activity, which was last held in 2014.

This means that the University performed among the top 2% of the QS. This year's rankings included 1422 institutions from 100 different locations worldwide, with 90 from the UK alone. The rankings are based on several different indicators including the breakdown of more than 16 million research publications.

This year, the University has also been awarded another prize by QS in "Recognition of Internationalisation". The new award shows that Manchester has a diverse international staff and student community, with 21% of staff members being classed as international and over 18,000 international students from more than 170 countries. 

This latest success follows on from Manchester retaining its position as one of the world's leading institutions according to the 2022 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings earlier this year.

The University ranked ninth globally out of nearly 1600 international entrants. This makes Manchester the only institution in Europe to be consistently named in the top 10 globally for action taken toward the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) since the rankings began.  

This sees Manchester maintain its position as the fifth best institution in the UK, and as a top ten European university according to the ARWU. Overall, the UK has 65 universities in the top 1000, with 38 of them listed in the top 500 and just eight of these in top 100. This year, more than 2000 institutions were scrutinised with the best 1000 universities being published.

 Launched in 2003, the ARWU rankings uses six indicators, including number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of highly cited researchers selected, and the number of articles published in high-profile journals such as Nature and Science. 

This latest ARWU ranking success follows on from Manchester maintaining its highest ever position in the prestigious QS World University Rankings in June earlier this year.  

In April, Manchester was also named the world's number one university in the Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings. The University topped the table of more than 1,200 universities from around the world on action taken towards the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The UN's 17 SDGs are the world's call to action on the most pressing challenges and opportunities facing humanity and the natural world. 

The Alliance Manchester Business School also saw international success earlier this year as its MBA ranked 30th in the world, 10th in Europe and 4th in the UK in the Financial Times Global MBA Ranking 2021. This is the annual ranking of the world’s best full-time MBAs.  

The University of Manchester has been named as the world’s 27th best university, maintaining its highest ever position in the QS World University Rankings.

These are ‘the world’s leading university rankings’ rating the globe’s top 1,000 institutions across 80 different countries. This year sees Manchester maintain its highest ever position globally whilst also ranking sixth in the UK, and eighth in Europe.

These results were released today (Wednesday, 10 June) by global higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds. QS uses six indicators to compile the rankings, including academic and employer reputation. Manchester’s reputation amongst employers was once again the highest-ranking indicator, scoring 97.4 out of 100.

Earlier in the year this outstanding reputation was again demonstrated when the University was named the most targeted institution by the UK’s top 100 graduate employers for the third year in a row by The Graduate Market in 2020. Manchester was also named the University of the Year for Graduate Employment by The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020.

QS itself also ranks Manchester in the top ten UK universities for overall graduate employability, alumni outcomes, employer reputations and partnerships with employers in its own employability rankings which lists more than 1,000 universities globally.

Other successes this year include Manchester being named the top institution in the country, second in Europe and eighth globally in the Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings. The Alliance Manchester Business School also saw improvement, moving up to fifth in the UK, 11th in Europe and 45th in the world in the latest Financial Times’ world’s best MBAs.

The University of Manchester has again ranked as the top higher education institution in the country for its social and environmental impact across its full range of functions.

The University has also been rated the second in Europe and eighth globally. These assessments come from this year’s Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings.

Manchester is competing with over 800 universities from around the world, an increase of 301 participating institutions when compared to the inaugural league table, last year.

In total, 857 universities from 89 countries and regions across six continents have been ranked for at least one SDG and 766 are included in the overall ranking.

The THE’s Impact Ranking Index is based on the local, national and international impact of the University’s education, research, operations and public engagement activity, using the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) as a framework. It is the first university ranking to use these criteria, rather than traditional metrics, such as reputation and research prestige.

This includes ways in which the University is addressing “SDG3 Good Health and Wellbeing” which assesses the contribution of universities to tackling communicable diseases such as COVID-19 and “SDG17 Partnerships for the Goals”, which measures cross-national collaboration and coordination in research and education.

The 17 SDGs came into effect in 2016 and have the support of 193 Member States of the United Nations. They are the UN’s call to action to end global poverty and protect the planet, ensuring all people enjoy peace, prosperity and good health. These include challenges such as climate change, economic inequality, innovation, disease, sustainable consumption, peace and justice, among other priorities.

This is an improvement on last year’s ranking and is the institution's highest ever position. It also sees the University maintain its position as the 6^th best in the UK.

This year’s ranking is the best-yet for the University since it was established in 2004, following the merger of Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST, when it ranked 78^th.

The ARWU ranking follows a number of similar successes for the University, such as its top-ten placement in this year’s THE Europe Teaching Rankings, and its highest ever position in this year’s QS World University Rankings.

The ARWU is published annually by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, after initially being launched by Shanghai Jiao Tong, a public research university based in Shanghai, China.

Manchester is now listed as the world’s 27th best university, ranking 6th in the UK and 8th in Europe.

Manchester’s reputation amongst employers was its highest scoring factor in this year's table, scoring 97.7 out of 100. This follows the University being ranked the fifth best UK institution for employability in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) Global University Employability Ranking.

Earlier this year the University was named the best HEI in Europe – and in the top three globally – for its social and environmental impact across its full range of functions. This prestigious new ranking came in the inaugural THE University Impact Rankings in April.

The University of Manchester has “surged” 27 places on a prestigious list ranking the world’s most innovative universities.

Manchester is now ranked 53^rd on the ‘Reuters Top 100: The World's Most Innovative Universities’ list, jumping nearly 30 places on last year’s 80^th position. It makes the University the biggest mover on the 2018 league table.

The Reuters Top 100 list "identifies and ranks the educational institutions doing the most to advance science, invent new technologies and power new markets and industries".

The judges of this year’s ranking say Manchester’s jump is largely due to the University's "groundbreaking research" into the super-material, Graphene, which was isolated at the University in 2004.

The judges added: “Ever since then the university has dominated the world’s research into the cutting-edge material. Manchester is home to the UK’s National Graphene Institute, and patents related to graphene account for about a quarter of all filings from the university over the five-year period examined for this list.”

Graphene is one of the strongest materials on Earth, yet also extremely light, flexible and highly conductive; it could prove a hugely important ingredient for future innovations in electronics, energy, transportation and other industries.

CEO of Graphene@Manchester James Baker said: “It’s great to see Manchester’s innovative edge recognised, especially in relation to graphene and two-dimensional materials. There are hundreds of highly cited research papers on graphene published by the University and National Graphene Institute each year.

“To truly capitalise on this, we are also on the verge of opening the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre which will accelerate graphene commercialisation and translate research into applications alongside industry partners.”

Manchester is one of only five UK institutions to make it on to the list, which is dominated by US institutions. Altogther North America has 48 universities in the top 100, Europe has 27, Asia has 23, and the Middle East has two. There are no universities in the ranking located in Africa, South America or Oceania.

The University of Manchester has reached its highest-ever position in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

Manchester is listed as the 34^th best institution in the world, jumping four places in comparison to last year’s results. The table also ranks us as the 8^th best university in the Europe, and 6^th in the UK.

Every year more than 1200 universities are ranked by ARWU, with the best 500 being published. The league table was launched in 2003.

The University has risen more than 44 places in the ARWU (from 78^th to 34^th place) since it was first established in 2004 following the merger of the Victoria University of Manchester and UMIST.

The ARWU says it ranks the world’s top universities based on ‘transparent methodology and objective third-party data’, by using six key indicators. These include the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes (25 for Manchester) and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics and the number of articles published in prestigious journals such as Nature and Science.

This is the University’s latest recent world ranking achievement, following closely to jumping five places in the latest QS World University Rankings - to a position of 29^th – equalling its highest-ever listing in that particular table. The University also appeared in the recent Times Higher Education league table.

The University of Manchester has moved up to seventh place in an independent ranking of Europe’s most innovative universities.

Produced by Reuters, the list ranks the top 100 universities in the continent, taking into account factors such as patents filed and cited, collaboration with industry in research publications and journal articles published. The list is designed to show the universities which are doing the most to advance science, invent new technologies and power new markets and industries.

Manchester has moved up nine places this year, with the profile on the Reuters website describing how the University has generated £680m to the UK economy since 2004 through commercialised research.

Graphene, first isolated at the University in 2004, is described as a major area of strength and the University has produced more than 100 spinoff companies in the past 30 years. These include Microbiosensor, a spin-out behind a medical device designed to detect life threatening infections, and SkinBioTherapeutics, an AIM listed life science company that focusses on skin health.

This latest ranking follows recent news that the University has attracted the most research income from UK industry of any institution in the country, with £24,831,000 of research income in 2016-2017 from UK industry, commerce and public corporations.

The University of Manchester has been ranked the 26^th ‘most international’ university in the world, in an independent analysis by the Times Higher Education.

The table is compiled using the international student score, international staff score, international co-authorship score and international reputation metrics collected for the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018.

The University is home to almost 11,000 international students from 190 countries. Likewise the University’s alumni community is made up of 380,000 people from more than 190 nations. The University of Manchester has gone up from 41^st to 16^th in the UK and has been named a top ten trans employer in the latest Stonewall Workplace Equality Index - an annual audit of workplace culture for lesbian, gay, bi and trans staff.

Run by Stonewall, the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights charity, the Workplace Equality Index is free to enter for any employer and 434 employers submitted entries to the 2018 Index, across the public, private and third sectors.

As part of the Index there is a staff feedback questionnaire that participating employers can ask their staff to complete. This year Stonewall received over 92,000 responses to the staff survey making it one of the largest national employment surveys in Britain.

At Manchester many activities are run by the ALLOUT staff network which co-ordinates events and works with the University on policy development and review. This year the group has been specially selected by Stonewall for a Highly Commended Network Group Award.

• A campus gender-neutral toilet map which features on the interactive map for staff, students and visitors

The University of Manchester is the most targeted university in the UK for top graduate employers, according to a new report from independent market research company, High Fliers Research.

Because employers don’t have the resources to visit and advertise with every university they tend to prioritise just a few. As a result the researchers looked at the institutions which attracted the largest number of leading graduate recruiters for campus fairs, recruitment presentations or other local university promotions during 2017-2018.

In ‘The Graduate Market in 2018’ report, Manchester came out top with organisations ranked in The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers. These include the biggest names in the public and private sectors.

High Fliers have been researching graduate recruitment at UK universities since 1994 and as well as the annual Graduate Market reports, they also produce The Times Top 100 Graduate Employers list each year. This version of the Graduate Market report also includes information about the wider graduate job market, salaries and internships, and factors such as the impact of Brexit.

The University of Manchester has moved up to 33^rd in the world in a leading independent league table of graduate employability.

Improving on last year’s 35^th place, the University remains 5^th out of the UK institutions which feature in the QS Graduate Employability Rankings 2018.

The compilers looked at 1,000 universities around the world, and published a list of the top 500, taking twice as many into account as the previous year’s table.

The table is created using a range of metrics, including employer reputation, where 30,000 global employers are asked to identify institutions from where they hire the best graduates. In this section, Manchester scored 96 out of a possible 100.

Other factors taken into account include alumni outcomes, graduate employment and partnerships with employers. Manchester also scored well in these, giving an overall score of 76.2 out of 100.

Tammy Goldfeld, Head of The University of Manchester’s Careers Service, said: “The University of Manchester is working hard to produce well-rounded graduates who learn from world class-researchers but also gain the other non-academic skills demanded by employers.

“This increase in our ranking indicates that programmes such as Stellify and our ethical grand challenges, which all students are encouraged to take part in, are helping graduates succeed in the workplace.”

The University also appears at 54^th in the World in the recently published Times Higher Education World University Rankings and 38^th in the Academic Ranking of World Universities.

Manchester features in every one of the five subject areas in the newly released QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017 that measures the best university courses around the world.

To compile the rankings, QS ranked 1,117 institutions and verified the provision of over 18,900 programmes.

Manchester’s subjects appear in the world’s elite in all of the five groupings: arts & humanities, engineering & technology, life sciences & medicine, natural sciences and social sciences & management.

Overall, the University of Manchester is currently ranked 29^th in the world in the global rankings from QS, a record high position.

Manchester has been ranked among the best cities in the world for international students in a ranking compiled by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, global higher education analysts and compiler of the QS World University Rankings.

The city has been placed at 23^rd, a rise of 13 places from last year’s table. The ranking is based on a survey of 18,000 international students and factors such as safety, liveability and employment of students.

The University of Manchester has students from more than 160 countries and is based in one of the UK’s most diverse cities. Manchester is world-famous for sport, culture and the spirit of discovery which has led to 25 Nobel prize winners either having worked or studied at the University.
