Centre for New Writing launches #micropoem14 competition

Following the success of last year's micropoetry competition, the Centre for New Writing at the School of Arts, Languages and Cultures, University of Manchester has just launched a #micropoem14 competition.

To enter, entrants have to tweet their micropoem, which must be themed around the ‘English Summer’, using the essential competition hashtag #micropoem14.

The competition runs between 7 and 14 July 2014 inclusive and winners will be announced by Friday 18 July 2014 at 5pm

The competition will be judged by a team of from the Centre for New Writing including the Centre’s co-director and poet John McAuliffe, whose 3rd book is Of All Places; Janet Rogerson and Eleanor Ward.

The prizes awarded for the best poems include tickets to a ‘Literature Live’ event, a signed Jeanette Winterson book and book vouchers.

The winning micropoems will be published on the Centre for New Writing’s online journal The Manchester Review.

The Centre’s micropoetry competition ran for the first time in July 2013, generating a huge amount of interest amongst poets, micropoets and twitter fans in general.

 Emerging poet Andrew McMillan won last year’s competition with, “Train, backwards through town / river/ the long, unbroken thought of it/ red kite/ chest burning/ phoenix rising from the ash trees.”

Micropoetry, also known as “twihaiku” or “twitter poetry”) is becoming increasingly popular. Intrigued by the brevity of its 140-character limit, and its potential for instantly reaching new audiences, writers are publishing poems on Twitter.
