Dozens participate in mathematics and data science workshop

The Department hosted its first Mathematics and Data Science Workshop for undergraduate, MSc, and PhD students on Wednesday, 13th November 2019. More than 70 students participated in the event, which included presentations from leading data scientists.

The invited speakers all work in businesses based in or near Manchester, and included Lead Data Scientist at Barclays Dr Tim Butters, Lead Data Scientist at N Brown Dr Mary Guettel, Data Science Team Leader at Peak Dr Tom Hassall and Senior Data Analyst at Auto Trader Dr Daniel Plant.

Their talks covered aspects of the day-to-day work of data analysts and data scientists, including the key technical skills required for the job, as well as common non-technical challenges that need to be overcome.

Many attending students used the opportunity for networking with the professionals and learned about internship and trainee opportunities. The workshop concluded with a lively Q&A session and a discussion on CV writing and job applications in general.

The event was funded by a Teaching Excellence Award received by the Department's Dr Stefan Guettel in 2018. Based on the positive feedback from the participants, the Department hopes to run a similar event again next year.
