Dr Alison Armstrong announces new research collaboration opportunities at Whiteley Village Retirement Community

MICRA hosted Dr Alison Armstrong from The Whiteley Foundation for Ageing Well for a lunchtime seminar on 5 September 2018.

Alison presented a fascinating insight into Whiteley Village, a retirement community of 500 that provides housing and care for the elderly of limited means, and has done so for over 100 years. From the historic data on the residents of Whiteley Village, it’s been shown that villagers live longer than would be expected for a low socioeconomic sector of the population. For women especially, the longevity gains are particularly impressive, living up to as long as the highest socioeconomic group.

The Whiteley Foundation for Ageing Well was founded in 2017 to facilitate Whiteley Village to be collaboration partners on new research projects. The Foundation can facilitate residents in helping to design and take part in research studies, and has staff and volunteers willing to participate. Whiteley Village is located in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, and has considerable facilities and space available for research use. The particular areas of interest for future research projects include (but are not limited to) well-being, loneliness and social isolation, transitions, provision of care, green space, housing, longevity, community and culture, and life histories.
