Dr Dalia Tsimpida gives lecture to mark World Hearing Day

The lecture on World Hearing Day, 3rd March was titled “You can’t improve what you don’t measure”.

MICRA was delighted to attend the premiere of a special lecture given by one of UoMs leading researchers on hearing loss, Dr Dalia Tsimpida.

Dr Tsimpida’s lecture covered three topics:

  • How big is the problem of hearing loss
  • Why do socio-economic and lifestyle factors matter
  • And why is hearing loss an important public health issue

Information on a study was presented, which demonstrated that hearing loss among older adults is as strongly associated with socioeconomic and lifestyle factors as with core demographic risk factors such as age and gender. Therefore Dr Tsimpida suggested that the common term “age-related hearing loss” should be retired, suggesting the new term: “lifestyle-related hearing loss”.

Dr Tsimpida stated: “The time is now, to make hearing health a public health priority, and most importantly, to let people enjoy healthier lives. Healthy ageing can not only add years to life, but it adds life to years, and hearing plays a major role in that.”

The lecture is available to view on YouTube.
