Dr Nan Zhang awarded prestigious Presidential Fellowship to research Ageing in China and Transitional Economies

Congratulations to Dr Nan Zhang on award of prestigious Presidential Fellowship to pursue her research agenda on Ageing in China and Transitional Economies. Dr Nan Zhangs new fellowship will start from 1 September 2018.

Nan told MICRA: 'Population ageing is challenging for every society and it can be even more so for resource-restricted countries. This fellowship will explore the experiences of growing old and inequalities in health and social care in transitional societies that are undergoing rapid socio-economic, demographic and epidemiological transitions.'

The initial stage will focus on growing old in urbanising China through existing cross-disciplinary networks and move on to build up cross-national partnerships and comparisons with other transitional economies such as India and Brazil.

The potential contributions of this fellowship are threefold. First, it will examine how structural factors during life span shape inequality at old ages, especially for the most vulnerable groups. Second, it aims to construct theories and concepts on ageing that are specific to transitional societies given existing ageing theories are mainly constructed in developed contexts. Third, it aims to build a sustainable model for promoting healthy ageing in resource-limited contexts from interdisciplinary perspectives.
