GDI welcomes new researchers to the team

The Global Development Institute is pleased to welcome new researchers to support our growing range of work.

Dr Shamel Azmeh - former GDI masters student and PhD researcher now returns to GDI as a Lecturer in Technology, Labour and Production. Shamel was Lecturer/Assistant Professor of International Development and International Political Economy at the University of Bath. His work focuses on international trade, global value chains, and digital trade. He is also a visiting fellow at Middle East Centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

Dr Johan Oldekop joins GDI as a Senior Lecturer in Environment and Development. Johan obtained his PhD in Environmental Biology at The University of Manchester and moved to the University of Sheffield as a Marie Curie Research Fellow. Prior to this he held post-doctoral positions at Washington State University, the Sheffield Institute for International Development and the University of Michigan. He is an Associate Editor for the journal Environmental Conservation.

Professor Dale Whittington from the Alliance Manchester Business School now joins GDI on a part-time basis as Professor of International Development.

Dr Judith Krauss starts a new position as Lecturer in Pedagogies for Development. Judith was a GDI PhD who worked as a Post-doctoral Associate in the Rory and Elizabeth Brooks Doctoral College within GDI and as Lecturer in Environment, Climate Change and Development.

We are also pleased to welcome back Dr Aarti Krishnan, who did her PhD at the Institute. She returns to GDI in October with a 1 year ESRC Postdoctoral Fellowship award. Following her PhD Aarti worked at ODI as an economist, working at the nexus between environmental, trade and development economics. Her areas of expertise include value chain analysis, green industrial policy, innovation and knowledge systems, digitalisation and regional development.

The FutureDAMs project is joined by three new research associates:

Roshan Adhikari joins us from Oregon State University with a PhD in Agricultural and Natural Resource Economics. Barnaby Dye joins following a doctorate at Oxford on the politics of dam resurgence. Pon Souvannaseng, joins us with a PhD in politics and economics of transnational investments, particularly in the land and resource sector.
