Launch of Schools Poetry Competition

Jeanette WintersonThe Centre for New Writing’s schools poetry competition was launched on World Poetry Day (21 March 2018) by Jeanette Winterson, author and Professor of New Writing at The University of Manchester.

The competition, now in its second year, is being run in collaboration with Whalley Range 11-18 High School and Levenshulme High School, and has proven to be a fantastic way of engaging with pupils from Year 7 to Year 11.

The theme for this year's competition is 'Home'.

Four PhD students from the Centre New Writing (Usma Malik, Charlotte, Tessa Harris and Chad Campbell) will facilitate poetry clinics within the schools, to offer feedback, advice and guidance for participating pupils.

Final poems will be judged and the winners will be selected in each age group. Prizes will be awarded at a special celebration event, which takes place at the University’s Martin Harris Centre in July 2018.
