Manchester hosts renowned Chinese children’s troupe

A renowned performing troupe of children from China is to enchant a theatre-full of school children in a colourful celebration of last week's Chinese New Year.

In a performance organised by The University of Manchester’s Confucius Institute, the Xiao Hong Hua Children's Art Troupe will perform at the Royal Northern College of Music on 9 February.

Xiao Hong Hua - translated as Little Red Flower –have been delighting audiences in China and abroad for 50 years – though they have not been seen before in the UK.

This performance, marking the Chinese Year of the Rabbit, will be attended by almost 600 schoolchildren from all over Greater Manchester.

The show is made up of songs, dances and music performed by over 30 Chinese children of different ages.

Director of the Confucius Institute Professor Kersti Börjars said: “As one of the most prestigious children’s performing troupes in China, the extraordinary performances and choreography of Xiao Hong Hua have enchanted Chinese and overseas audiences for years.

“We are delighted be hosting them and it will be a fitting way to mark the Chinese New Year.”

Notes for editors

The Xiao Hong Hua (Little Red Flower) Arts Troupe from Nanjing, China will perform at  the Royal Northern College of Music on Oxford Road on Wednesday 09 February from 2 – 3.20pm.

Photographers are welcome to photograph the troupe during the performance. Some of the schools have also given permission  for their students to be photographed.
