Manchester Music PhD student shortlisted for Composition: Wales 2021

A Music PhD student from The University of Manchester is among eight talented musicians shortlisted for Composition: Wales 2021

Cameron Biles-Liffell, who also completed his master’s degree at The University’s Department of Music, was selected for his soundscape for chamber orchestra Frozen Plains. His composition and the others shortlisted will be workshopped, recorded and performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales at Hoddinott Hall in the Millennium Centre, where composers also receive expert guidance from BBC NOW principle conductor Ryan Bancroft and composition mentors, Gavin Higgins and Sarah Lianne Lewis.

“I am incredibly honoured to have my piece, Frozen Plains, selected for this composition scheme, particularly as someone with Welsh heritage having a piece performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales is an amazing opportunity,” said Cameron.

“I have to say, working with Prof Camden Reeves during my master’s and now PhD has helped me develop a lot as a composer,” he added. “Frozen Plains was a turning point for me as a composer and it is thanks to Camden’s teaching that allowed me to become a more sophisticated composer.”
