Manchester scientists team with Hot Poets to educate on climate change

Centre for Crisis Studies and Mitigation members Professor David Schultz and Dr Gareth Clay have collaborated with Arts Council–funded group Hot Poets to create two stirring, powerful films.

The poems are about climate change and the academics' own research, and were made for the UN climate change conference COP26.

Poet Yomi Ṣode was inspired by stories of extreme weather and climate change from Professor Schultz's research to write 'Chaos in the Sky and on Land'. This poem speaks of how we already have the tools to build a more resilient society, but fail to act:

Dr Clay collaborated with poet Joelle Taylor, who wrote the poem 'Could Mr Sands Please Come to Reception?' about Dr Clay's work on wildfire mitigation:

The Hot Poets worked with a total of 12 UK scientists and poets to produce a series of films for the high-profile climate change meeting, which took place in Glasgow. The poems have since been turned into a book, with ten other organisations – including the Met Office, London School of Economics, and the RSPB – taking part.
