Mathematics Research Students' Conference the biggest yet

The Manchester Mathematics Research Students' Conference (MRSC) is a University of Manchester students' conference occurring annually. The thirteenth such conference took place on 27 September 2019. This year's event was once again made possible by the generous support of IBM, which sponsored the conference.

The aim of MRSC is to bring together PhD students from across the Department of Mathematics, and this was achieved this year with a record attendance of 90 students.

The conference featured talks and poster presentations from students working in different areas of mathematics. This was a great opportunity to welcome new students and to introduce them to the wide range of research taking place in the Department.

To give students an idea of life after a PhD, a talk was given by Dr Peter Fenner from IBM on mathematics research in industry. In contrast, Prof Louise Walker gave a talk on what it could be like to be an academic. Prizes for the best talks were awarded to Catherine Bruce, George Price and Borys Kuca, and for poster presentation to Erik Garcia Neefjes, Amit Arfan and Zhang Yuqing.
