Maths staff nominated for Faculty "Better World Showcase Award"

The team organised a "Women in Mathematics Research" day in June 2018 in the School of Mathematics. The event was aimed at year 12 students with the intention of indicating what a career in research in Mathematics is like and to inspire (particularly female) students that such a career path might be something that they could consider.

The day included a couple of plenary talks on what a career as a mathematician is like, famous female mathematicians throughout history and a keynote talk by a PhD student in the school on some aspects of applied mathematics. In addition, there were several parallel workshops on different topics run by mathematicians at different stages of their careers where time was factored in for the mathematicians to say a bit about their careers so far and allow students to ask questions. All of the speakers and volunteers for our event were female.

As nominees the team have been called upon to produce a poster which will then go on a roadshow in January, to demonstrate the fantastic work that goes on across the Faculty in terms of public engagement. A judging panel will decide on a winner for each category entered and a Showcase Celebration Event will take place in the Great Hall, Sackville St on Wednesday 6 February 2019 which will be hosted by the Vice-President and Dean of Faculty, Professor Martin Schroeder.

We wish Demi, Abi, Liz, Catherine and Louise the best of luck!
