Prof Debbie Price speaks on later life divorce and retirement planning

MICRA's Professor Debbie Price discussed later life divorce and the impact on retirement planning at a webinar recently hosted by Legal and General.

Legal and General hosted their webinar for financial advisors on 18 November, and MICRA's Debbie Price joined panellists Amyr Rocha-Lima, Partner, Holland Hahn & Wills LLP; Rob Miles, Head of Adviser Sales, Legal & General Home Finance and Meg Dickens, Marketing Director, Legal & General Retail Retirement. The event was led by Cecilia Furner, Strategic Account Director for Legal & General Retail Retirement.

Debbie is one of the lead authors of the groundbreaking and highly acclaimed report ‘A Guide to the Treatment of Pensions on Divorce: the Report of the Pension Advisory Group’.

Debbie stressed the importance of financial advisors being involved from the start of the process when people are first thinking of separation, and also pointed out that around half of cases do not end up in court and agreements are formed consensually. Debbie pointed out the importance of financial advice in general and outside of the legal process.

Debbie also discussed women's poverty in later life caused by unequal divorce settlements. In the 1990s, 40% of women who were divorced faced poverty in later life. Whilst this is an improving picture, there is still work to be done in the area.
