Statement

In the summer of 2017 two research groups from The University of Manchester each published research into the performance of single-molecule magnets.

The University of Manchester completed an investigation and reached a finding of research misconduct against a senior academic who is no longer in the employment of the University. The investigation was conducted in accordance with the University's Code of Practice for Investigating Concerns about the Conduct of Research.

To counter external rumours we are issuing this statement to confirm that Dr Nicholas Chilton, Dr David Mills and their co-authors, Conrad Goodwin, Fabrizio Ortu and Daniel Reta (Nature, 2017, 548, 439-442) were not the subject of the investigation and were not found to be implicated in any misconduct.
