Top EU diplomat to deliver JMCE 2021 annual lecture

The Manchester Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (JMCE) is pleased to announce that its 2021 Annual Lecture will be delivered by The EU’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom.

The Manchester Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence (JMCE) is pleased to announce that its 2021 Annual Lecture will be delivered by The EU’s Ambassador to the UK, HE João Vale de Almeida, in a lecture entitled: “The European Union and the United Kingdom: a new relationship in a changing World”.

João Vale de Almeida was previously the EU’s ambassador to the US and the UN. Prior to that, he was a senior advisor to the former European Commission president José Manuel Barroso.

Currently the most senior EU official in the country, Mr Almeida will address the future of EU-UK relations post-Brexit, the controversies surrounding the COVID-19 vaccination programme, the rights of EU citizens residing in the UK and the future prospects of cooperation between the UK’s Higher Education sector and the EU.

This event will appeal to the interests and concerns of many of our students and staff.”

The JMCE is an interdisciplinary forum for the promotion of research and teaching on Europe across The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Chester.

The lecture, which is free and open to all, will be held online and include a public Q&A with the Ambassador, which will be chaired by Professor of Politics, Dimitris Papadimitriou.
