Ensuring all talented students can thrive

We're funding scholarships so that financial barriers never hold back talent.

Why it matters

At Manchester, we're committed to breaking down barriers to education – yet many students still face challenges getting here and thriving once they do.

  • Young people from disadvantaged backgrounds are less likely to attend university. Beyond financial barriers, many lack the connections, confidence or guidance to see higher education as an option.
  • One in four of our students come from low-income households and need additional financial support and guidance.
  • Students who are the first in their family to attend university often lack professional networks, making it harder to access career opportunities and workplace connections.

How it works

Your support unlocks potential and fuels ambition in students facing barriers to reach Manchester.

  • Our Manchester Access Programme gives talented young people the skills to succeed in higher education. Last year, 179 participants went on to study at our university.
  • Donor funding provides essentials for students struggling with living costs – from laptop vouchers to grants for sports clubs. It also sustains our Basic Needs Centre, offering wellbeing support, free cooking classes and financial advice.
  • Through the Global Graduates programme, funded by donors and led by volunteers, students from low-income backgrounds build networks and gain transformative international experience.

“As a working-class cockney, I came from a loving and supportive home – and this has informed my approach to philanthropy: providing opportunities for disadvantaged young people. Every little helps. The key thing is to start.”

"The greatest gift I can give is making a difference in the life of another human being. Especially if that person is young, from an underprivileged background and dreams of attending university."

“Students at Manchester should all have the same opportunities to thrive, belong and succeed, regardless of their background or circumstances.

“Giving acts as a catalyst, advancing our response to student needs – financial, social or anything they’re dealing with in their university life – and enables us to remove those barriers so every student can thrive and belong here at the University."
