Course overview

  • Improve a range of scientific skills if you are a health professional working in a clinical setting.
  • Take CPD units adapted from the doctorate-level Higher Specialist Scientific Training (HSST) programme to deliver the same training at master's level.
  • Choose from courses in therapeutics, contemporary healthcare issues, advanced history taking and audiology.

Advice to applicants

You will be required to provide the following supporting documentation with your application:

  • a personal statement (approximately 300-500 words about why you wish to take this course and how it will affect your personal and professional development).

On receipt of all required supporting documentation, your application will be reviewed by the programme director. Applicants are considered on an academic and relevant professional experience basis, based on all information provided.

Course description

Our Specialist Clinical Training CPD units are aimed at health professionals looking to improve specific scientific skills and have been adapted from the doctorate-level Higher Specialist Scientific Training (HSST) programme to deliver the same training at master's level.

We offer the following six units that award 15 postgraduate credits each upon completion.


Blended learning

There are situations in which medicines can be given by another professional following the directions of a prescriber, referred to as patient-specific directions.

Provider organisations should have arrangements in place that enable these legal requirements to be implemented.

This CPD unit will enable you to evaluate and apply knowledge of appropriate therapeutic interventions relevant to your clinical practice, including non-medication-based therapeutic and preventative interventions.

You will gain underpinning knowledge and understanding of a range of therapeutics utilised in practice to help you work with other clinicians and healthcare professionals within multiprofessional teams. 

Contemporary Issues in Healthcare

Blended learning

This unit will enable you to evaluate your understanding of clinical bioinformatics, genomics and personalised medicine, and apply your knowledge to the practice of your specialism.

The course will also advance your understanding and insight of the conceptual and analytical frameworks that underpin patient and public involvement, gain experience of working with patients and the public and evaluate the impact on service delivery, education, research and innovation.  

Advanced History Taking, Clinical and Communication Skills

Campus-based learning

This unit focuses on the knowledge and understanding you need for communication with patients, their families and carers, professionals within multidisciplinary teams and other agencies, as well as history taking and clinical examination within the scope of practice.

You will learn and evaluate expert knowledge in taking a relevant focused history to perform a limited but focused and accurate clinical examination in patients with increasingly complex issues and in increasingly challenging circumstances.

Hearing Loss

Blended learning

This unit focuses on types of hearing losses; specifically unilateral hearing loss, sudden hearing loss and auditory processing disorders.

It provides an opportunity to reconsider your current understanding of these types of hearing loss. Teaching is delivered by online presentations from experts in the field and project based learning.

Clinical Presentation, Assessment and Management

Blended learning

This unit focuses on implantable and non-implantable hearing devices. You will consider amplification from multiple angles, from the technical and pathological sides to the psychological and logistical sides. Teaching is through online presentations and project based learning.

Audiology Practice: Adolescents and Children

Blended learning

Taking our understanding of hearing loss in children further, this unit provides input from experts from within audiology and beyond to explore paediatric audiology and the wider context.

Content covers medical and surgical considerations to the clinical and domestic context of hearing loss, helping you maximise audiological care for children. Teaching is in the form of e-learning, complex case studies and project-based learning.

Course duration and dates

Each unit will run over the course of a semester (approximately four months).
