Aims

The aims of the MRes Techniques Workshop unit are to:
• Increase the students breadth of knowledge and understanding of laboratory techniques applicable to maternal and fetal health
• Provide hands on training in broad range of laboratory techniques
• Provide training in experimental design, hypothesis testing, accurate recording of experimental procedures, data presentation and interpretation
• Equip students with a portfolio of laboratory skills and be able to apply these in the design and conduct of subsequent research projects.

Learning outcomes

The student should:
• Understand the basis of laboratory techniques and the rationale for use of specific techniques
• Be aware of laboratory health and safety
• Be able to accurately record experimental procedures in sufficient detail for an independent scientist to perform the experiment
• Be able to interpret data from an experimental procedure, draw reasoned conclusions about their findings and present them in the context of maternal and fetal health
• Show critical thinking capacity in planning and designing an experimental procedure
• Perform basic laboratory procedures independently and a broad range of laboratory techniques, with little or no supervision

Assessment methods

Students will complete a written record of each workshop in ‘laboratory book style’, to gain training in recording laboratory experiments and to demonstrate understanding and interpretation. Students will be assessed on their understanding of the experiment, the accuracy and completeness of the method, their ability to interpret research findings and consider alternative applications of method. An assessment form will be completed by the MFH staff member responsible for each workshop. The Programme Administrator will forward the assignments to the tutor, who will award an individual mark for each written assignment. All work will be moderated by a second marker.

Feedback methods

Feedback is provided to students during the workshop (oral feedback on practical skills) and on the written report (including annotation of reports and overall feedback). Students have the opportunity to provide feedback on the unit through the University Unit Evaluation Questionnaires and in the MRes in Maternal and Fetal Health student feedback session organised by Dr Lynda Harris at the end of the first semester.
