Equity and Merit Scholarships for students from Ethiopia

Eligibility

Our master’s scholarships are aimed at talented applicants, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds. To apply for a scholarship, you must:

  • have two years work experience not including volunteering and unpaid internships;
  • hold a bachelor’s degree with an overall grade of excellent, or preferably a master’s degree. The awards are for academically outstanding students and typically this means that you are in the top 10% of your class;
  • be a resident citizen of Ethiopia and have not previously studied outside Africa (training of six months or less does not count);
  • be committed to returning home and able to demonstrate the potential to make a positive impact on the future of Ethiopia;
  • have a clear idea of how studying in Manchester will benefit both your career and the wider community.

English language requirements

You must submit a recognised English language test certificate together with your scholarship application. We can't consider your application if you don't provide a valid test result.

We accept the following English language tests:

Each master’s programme on the scholarship list has its own requirements in terms of English test scores. Please refer to the course profiles for more details. In most cases you will need a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 (with no sub-test less than 5.5) or TOEFL 90 to be awarded a scholarship.

We have a limited number of funded places available on our pre-sessional English programmes for outstanding candidates who don't meet the relevant language requirement at the time of application. If you are selected for the scholarship, we will tell you if you need to take a pre-sessional course at our language centre.

Booking and taking an English test

You can take the IELTS or TOFEL test in Ethiopia. To find your nearest test centre visit IELTS or TOFEL. You are responsible for booking and paying for the costs of the test.

Places at test centres get filled up quickly, so we recommend you book your test at the earliest opportunity. You must take the test before mid-July 2020 in order to get your result in time for when we open for scholarship applications in August 2020 for entry in September 2021.

It’s important to prepare well for your English language test in advance. You can find tips on how to prepare and official practice materials on each of the test providers’ websites. You might also want to consider doing a preparation course. Talk to your local test centre to find out more.

We don't grant any exemptions to these language requirements to applicants who have studied in English and we don't accept a certificate of English language proficiency from an Ethiopian university.

How to apply

Applications are closed now.

Applications will open in August 2020 for entry in September 2021.

To apply you will need:

  • Degree certificates and transcripts, showing subjects taken and grades achieved. (Temporary copies or certificates of graduation will suffice for this application).
  • An IELTS or TOFEL test result.
  • Two up-to-date signed references. References must be on letter headed paper and addressed to 'Equity and Merit Scholarships at The University of Manchester'. They don't need to be sent confidentially and there is no fixed format.

It isn't necessary to have an academic offer of admission to apply for the scholarship. There is no advantage or disadvantage in having an academic offer. If you are selected for the scholarship you will be automatically admitted to the course of your choice.
