Policy on additional costs
All students should normally be able to complete their programme of study without incurring additional study costs over and above the tuition fee for that programme. Any unavoidable additional compulsory costs totalling more than 1% of the annual home undergraduate fee per annum, regardless of whether the programme in question is undergraduate or postgraduate taught, will be made clear to you at the point of application. Academic entry qualification overview
We require a primary dental qualification from a recognised institution. You should also have at least two years' recent experience in general professional practice.
English language
International students must demonstrate English proficiency through a secure and approved testing system.
We ask for English language proof if you are from non-majority English speaking countries (a list of majority English speaking countries, as defined by the UK Home Office, can be found here ).
Specifically, we require a minimum of:

- IELTS: 6.5 (with no less than 6.0 in all components)

Advice to applicants
You must provide the following with your application:
- Proof of two years' recent post-graduation clinical experience, this must not include your internship.
- Two academic references will be sought. You will be required to provide contact details for two academic referees when completing your application form. Professional references can be provided in instances where you have been out of university for more than 3 years.
- Copies (not originals) of degree certificates.
- Official academic transcripts of previous study showing the subjects taken and grades obtained. If these are in a language other than English please provide official translations. If you hold a BDS from a UK university, you do not need to provide a transcript of results, but you must provide a copy of the certificate.
- Personal statement (300-500 words).
- full CV.
- Copies (not originals) of English Language certification if you are an EU/international applicant from a country not officially recognised as majority English-speaking.
Only applications with all required supporting documentation will be processed. Conditional offers cannot be made for those who do not meet the minimum requirements for the course.
How your application is considered
We consider your academic transcripts, academic references, evidence of clinical skills and knowledge developed since graduation, and evidence of your interest in fixed and removable prosthodontics when assessing applications. An interview may also be required to explore these areas.
Overseas (non-UK) applicants
Self-funded international applicants for this course will be required to pay a deposit of £1,000 towards their tuition fees before a confirmation of acceptance for studies (CAS) is issued. This deposit will only be refunded if immigration permission is refused. We will notify you about how and when to make this payment.
For CAS purposes, you will be asked to upload a copy of your current valid passport showing the photograph page with your application. This must show your full name, date of birth, nationality, passport number and the date the passport is valid until, which must be later than the date of your planned arrival in the UK, and the start date of your course.
You cannot use your CAS to apply for a visa more than three months before the start date of your course, the Admissions Team will be in contact at the appropriate time.
Your CAS number is only valid for one Tier 4 application.Fitness to practise / health requirements

Course details
Course description
Our three-year MSc (Clin) Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics course is designed for dental practitioners who want to further their knowledge of prosthodontics up to specialist level.
You will develop skills in providing a range of procedures, including complex removable prostheses, implant-supported prostheses, integrated fixed and removable prostheses, and restoration of tooth wear using direct and indirect materials.
You will gain insight into clinical and technical skills, contemporary prosthodontic techniques, scientific understanding of fixed and removable prosthodontics, diagnosis and treatment planning and reflective prosthodontic practice.
You will undertake up to six clinical sessions per week where you will see, assess and treat patients. You will have the option to undertake more extensive treatment plans with further experience in the broader area of restorative dentistry.
Completion of this course will make you eligible to sit the MPros Royal College examination.
In addition, you will develop research planning and implementation skills through the dissertation unit.
Aims
This course aims to:
- provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the complex issues involved in the scientific basis of fixed and removable prosthodontics;
- develop your knowledge, skills and attitude to enable critical evaluation and problem solving for prosthodontic problems to allow you to practice independently;
- provide you with knowledge and clinical experience of fixed and removable prosthodontics (including an appreciation of an interdisciplinary approach to comprehensive patient care);
- ensure you are competent in the design and interpretation of original clinical research (including data collection and statistical analysis);
- enable you to plan, implement and complete a research project showing initiative and personal responsibility.
Teaching and learning
Our teaching and learning methods are designed to encourage you to take responsibility for your own learning and to integrate work with formal educational activities.
You will learn through clinical sessions, e-learning, lectures, clinical skills training, technical/laboratory skills training, seminars, and specialist courses in implants and endodontics.

Research Methods
Formal assessment takes the form of two tutor-marked assignments.

Formal assessment takes the form of two tutor-marked assignments.
Specialist clinical component
You will be assessed via a variety of formative and summative methods. These include patient logs, submission of clinical and technical skills work, written assignments and structured essay papers, Multiple Short Answer (MSA), Single Best Answer (SBA) and Extended Matching Question (EMQ) papers, Objective Structured Long Examination Record (OSLER), mini-case write-ups and structured oral examinations.
Dissertation
You will also produce a dissertation that is 10,000-15,000 words in length.

Dissertation (60 credits)
The dissertation provides training in identification, formulation and implementation of a specific research project.
Teaching and learning methods are designed to encourage you to take responsibility for your own learning and to integrate work with formal educational activities.
Examples of dissertations submitted include:
- An investigation to evaluate fracture resistance of fibre-reinforced crowns
- The effect of isolating solution on the attachment and retention of candidal species on denture acrylic
- A comparative assessment of dentists' perceptions of smile aesthetics in facial and dental views
- The outcomes of providing dental implants to patients with risk of osteoporosis of the mandibular bone
- A comparison of prosthodontic treatment plan prescribing provided by vocational dental practitioners and their trainees in England
