Overview

The course is designed to make students aware of the work flow required to assess evaluate a reservoir and create a development plan based upon their evaluation. A comprehensive data set will be provided from a working offshore field.

Aims

To introduce the geoscientist to the tools and to undertake a reservoir development project on a subsurface data set for a field; this will include, interpretation and integration of seismic, well, fluids, core and production data sets for an offshore field. The project will assess the Integrated Subsurface Description, Subsurface Uncertainty and Risk Assessment and Development plan for a reservoir in an offshore field. Student will work in groups to understand the geoscientistâ€'s role in this type of evaluation, typical suites of data from producing fields (well data, seismic etc.) will be used in the evaluation. Teams will be expected to present their result and write a concise report documenting their interpretations.

Learning outcomes

The student will:

• Become familiar with and use a typical oil field data set comprising well, seismic, well test, pressure and production data sets.

• Assess the key reservoir characteristics and parameters

• Calculate the hydrocarbon resource

• Become familiar with reservoir modelling techniques

• Understand and apply the concepts of Subsurface Uncertainty and Risk Analysis.

• Create a development plan for the reservoir

Syllabus

A group project over a three week period. A data set is provides, and key tuition on various software applications. Regular tutorial are given to guide the project and provide formative feedback. The students are required to produce a short summary report per group and make a 15 minute oral presentation at the end of the project.
