Specified use

The University of Manchester's oldest scholarship was established to commemorate the 1851 visit by Queen Victoria and the Duke of Wellington. It supports fees for study in any area of Religions and Theology. Applicants must demonstrate ability in using New Testament Greek or Hellenistic Greek (e.g. Septuagint). The Wellington Scholarship holder is at the heart of the activities of the Centre for Biblical Studies, organising research seminars and interacting regularly with leading scholars in the field.

Tenable period

3 years full-time or 6 years part-time.

Continuation of the award is subject to satisfactory progress.

Academic requirements

  • Bachelor's (Honours) degree at 2:1 or above (or overseas equivalent); and
  • Master's degree in a relevant subject - with an overall average of 65% or above, a minimum mark of 65% in your dissertation and no mark below 55% (or overseas equivalent)

You must submit your online application for a place on the PhD Religions and Theology programme.

You must also submit an essay, dissertation or other paper demonstrating ability in using New Testament Greek or Hellenistic Greek, with a note that this is an entry for the Wellington Scholarship. Your full online application must include:
  • A 1,500 word PhD research proposal
  • Copies of the academic transcript and certificate from both your Bachelor's and Master's degrees. If your Master's degree is pending, please provide an interim transcript
  • An up to date academic CV, detailing your education and qualifications; employment history; publications; and any other relevant information
  • You must nominate two academic referees (including one from your most recent institution). Your referees will be contacted directly via the Referee Portal following submission of your application form.
  • International applicants must additionally provide English Language evidence (e.g IELTS)

Selection criteria

Applications will be ranked on academic track-record, the quality of the research proposal and the submitted essay, dissertation or other paper.

Deferral information

Offers of funding are not deferrable. If you cannot start your programme by the date mentioned in your studentship offer letter, the award will be withdrawn. You are permitted to re-apply in future.
