Joint-award between The University of Manchester and IISC Bangalore

The University of Manchester and the Indian Institute of Science Bangalore have partnered to offer a joint-award PhD programme in a variety of projects across the Faculty of Science and Engineering, with applicants spending four years across Manchester and Bangalore.

Students enrolled on the newly launched programme can expect to benefit from the world-class academic supervision of two globally renowned universities as they spend two years based at each institution.

Competitive scholarship opportunities will be available for successful applicants to secure a varying degree of support including tuition fee sponsorship and top-up awards for living costs.

There are four fully funded studentships available for suitable candidates to start this four-year programme at IISc Bangalore in August 2023 or at The University of Manchester in October 2023. 

These scholarships are open to all nationalities and across all research areas, and will be of interest to students of the highest calibre who have the commitment and desire to work on challenging research projects in a world leading research environment.

Applicants must meet entry requirements at both institutions:

IISc Bangalore lead projects:

• Have successfully completed the required coursework and comprehensive examination within 24 months of enrolment/joining at IISc with a minimum CGPA of 8.0/10;
• Be able to enrol in the Joint PhD Award at IISc from August 2023 or as soon as possible thereafter with no requirement for a (further) visa to study in India.  

The University of Manchester lead projects:

• Hold (or expect to achieve) a first class or upper-second class UK honours degree (or international equivalent).
• Ideally hold a master’s-level qualification at merit or distinction (or international equivalent).
• Demonstrable excellent communication skills, including in English language, a proficiency in which should be demonstrably indicated by meeting our English language requirements.

You must also have:

• Willingness to travel to the partner institution to undertake 2 years of study, if such travel is permitted by UK and India governments
• Demonstrable suitability of academic background for the proposed project
• Demonstrable skills in team-working and self-organisation 
• Demonstrable interest and curiosity in the proposed area of research
