Overview

Chinese Language 7 consolidates and builds upon students’ knowledge of and skills in Mandarin Chinese that they have previously acquired prior to coming to university or in Chinese Language 5 and Chinese Language 6. The course continues to develop students’ linguistic and cultural awareness by emphasising the links between a higher level of linguistic competency and socio-cultural literacy. Students will interpret texts related to Chinese popular culture, social change, cultural traditions and more. Through linguistic and cultural comparisons, students will further their understanding of Chinese society and their ability to use the Chinese language to function successfully within a Chinese cultural context. Students taking CHIN51071 will already be beyond A-level standard in their Chinese and should be approaching a level of language proficiency equivalent to somewhere between HSK levels 5 and 6.

Aims

This course aims to:

  • Further enhance students’ Chinese vocabulary and grammatical capability
  • Expand students’ listening, reading, speaking and writing skills across a greater range of subject matter
  • Provide students with “real-life”, practical situations to immerse them in an authentic Chinese language environment in which they can practise the language

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course students will:

  • Be able to understand a range of everyday Chinese texts and audio-visual materials
  • Feel confident navigating real-life, practical Chinese-language situations
  • Have continued to build upon their existing vocabulary and grammatical knowledge
  • Be approaching a total vocabulary of 3000+ Chinese characters
  • Have strengthened their listening, reading, speaking and writing skills across a broad range of subject matter

Syllabus

Topics based on those in the textbook New Practical Reader 6 (which might be adjusted according to students’ levels) as well as HSK 5-focused exercises

Weeks 5&6:  Chinese theatre and plays

Weeks 7&8:  Attitudes towards life

Weeks 9&10: Behind the name: popular culture names

Teaching and learning methods

3 hours of teaching every week, with an additional hour every second week.

Classes are focussed equally on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

Blackboard is used to provide information about the course requirements and additional learning materials.

By the end of this course students will be able to:

  • Understand and relevantly apply Chinese vocabulary and grammar to real-life situations
  • Participate in conversations about the aspects of Chinese society and culture
  • Converse with a developing degree of accuracy in current Chinese
  • Write in Chinese with an increasingly level of accuracy and complexity on a range of contemporary topics

By the end of this course students will be able to:

  • Show competence in the understanding a wide range of texts and audio-visual materials in Chinese and display the ability to translate them between English and Chinese
  • Construct and defend a balanced argument, taking into consideration and responding to alternative viewpoints, and apply their own criteria of judgement in assessing, analysing and adapting such viewpoints
  • Demonstrate an ability to use sources analytically and communicate their findings in proper Chinese
  • Develop written and verbal communication strategies to elicit and convey meaning

Practical skills

By the end of this course students will be able to:

  • Comprehend and produce texts of an upper-intermediate level relating to contemporary social issues
  • Interact orally in situations of a sophisticated nature common to the social context
  • Understand and respond to written materials linked to the topics studied
  • Develop accuracy and speed in written Chinese for the purpose of tasks such as translating and summarising

By the end of this course students will be able to:

  • Use organizational skills (including task and time management) both individually and in a group situation
  • Display communication skills in new cultural and linguistic contexts
  • Demonstrate autonomy, self-discipline, time-management and initiative
  • Use Chinese keyboard and software for communicative purposes and in a variety of presentation contexts
