Overview

The unit will introduce students to advanced neuroanatomy and key concepts in the cognitive neuroscience of learning, memory, attention, language, emotion and executive function. 

Aims

The unit aims to:

The unit aims to introduce students to advanced concepts in cognitive neuroscience and develop analytical and critical thinking skills. Research and evaluation skills will be enhanced through practical lab sessions.

 

Teaching and learning methods

This course will consist of 18 hours of lectures and 4 X 2-hour laboratory classes.

E-learning provision: Lecture content, supplementary reading and resources, and a monitored discussion board will be provided via Blackboard.

 

Knowledge and understanding

  • demonstrate an understanding of cognitive neuroscience topics
  • have an appreciation of the methods used in cognitive neuroscience research

·         critically evaluate  empirical studies and scholarly reviews in cognitive neuroscience

·         analyse and make critical judgements about theories and findings in cognitive neuroscience

  • with guidance, conduct research on a topic in cognitive neuroscience
  • use a range of sources (library, internet, electronic databases) to gather information
  • plan how to construct a written argument based around appropriate empirical evidence
  • Structure research results in a clear and coherent report format.
  • Write research reports in accordance with APA guidelines

Assessment methods

Final Examination 75 MCQs which is 90 mins and worth 60% of unit. 

1500 Laboratory report worth 40% of unit. 

Feedback methods

Feedback will be provided through answers to questions asked in lecture and lab sessions, practice quizzes and through discussion forums on Blackboard. The lecturers will answer any questions via email. Feedback will be made available on the exam and lab report after the exam period.
