Course description

The MEng Aerospace Engineering with Management provides students with a broad, well-balanced aerospace engineering education which prepares our graduates for professional careers in the aerospace industry, coupled with specialism in management.

We aim to instil a theoretical knowledge of engineering science in addition to a solid base of practical skills, an understanding of design, comprehension of the commercial world and competence in transferable skills (problem solving, team working, creativity and IT).

Engineering is not just about technology. It is about people, companies, manufacturing and commerce. Engineering decisions must normally be made within a commercial context and engineers are often found in senior management positions where they are required to be leaders and strategic planners, as well as problem-solvers and designers. Combining engineering with management produces a lively, interesting, and multidisciplinary degree, with excellent career prospects for graduates.

Graduates emerge from this degree as a well-rounded graduate with not only a solid engineering training, but also a useful insight into the commercial world. This will equip them for a wide range of careers, including general management and sales, as well as jobs in more technical fields.

Aims

This course aims to give students a comprehensive knowledge of engineering science and a strong base of practical skills. The course will develop competence in transferable skills, particularly team working, creativity and adaptability, as well as enabling students to specialise in advanced Aerospace engineering topics. Specialist management focused units enable our students to plan large engineering projects in addition to developing their technical skills.

Our MEng course gives students hands-on industrial and commercial experience to boost their career prospects and therefore our graduates are well prepared to take up leadership positions in a successful career in industry.

Teaching and learning

The course is taught via a combination of lectures, tutorial classes, practical laboratory sessions and computer-based sessions, There is a design project each year, which involves teamwork in small groups, and allows students to apply and develop their problem-solving and project management skills.  In the third year each student undertakes an individual project, allowing them to pursue a particular subject or application area in greater depth.

Coursework and assessment

Most course units are assessed through an examination (at the end of the semester) and coursework which is undertaken throughout the year.  Parts of the coursework are, in many instances, associated with practical laboratory sessions, whilst others may be based on problem sheets, reports etc. A few subjects, for example Design, are assessed purely on coursework. Course unit details

The course technical content is largely similar to the other MEng programmes; however, throughout every year there are two management-focused units which develop skills in areas such as project management, entrepreneurship, and risk management. This thread of management-focused study, in addition to technical engineering subjects creates a unique student experience and set of graduate job opportunities.

The first year establishes a strategic overview of the main areas of aerospace engineering and introduces the underlying science and mathematics. Students will be introduced to the fundamental principles of aerospace vehicles and systems as well as developing basic knowledge and skills applicable to all areas of engineering such as mechanics, structures, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and engineering design. 

The second and third years develop the key knowledge and understanding necessary to enter industry, or postgraduate study. Students will cover key aspects of aircraft and spacecraft systems, performance and design and will also develop further knowledge and skills in the key engineering disciplines of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, structures, dynamics and control. In the third year students will also have the opportunity to undertake an individual project linking with and supporting industrial or academic research within the university.

The final year comprises a full-year aerospace vehicle design and build project combining all of the engineering science taught up to this point. In addition to the design project, research-inspired specialist units are taught giving students the option to focus on their exact desired discipline.

Facilities

Our students will have access to a nationally-unique set of wind tunnel facilities ranging from low subsonic to hypersonic flows. We have a range of facilities for building and testing of unmanned aerial vehicles and drones. We also have facilities for testing of propellers, micro jet engines and rocket motors. Additionally we have a suite of spacecraft environment test facilities and our own satellite ground station. 

On the computational side, students have access to key aerospace engineering relevant software and unique computational facilities.
