Course overview

  • This 5 year course is identical to Mechanical Engineering MEng but has a year out in industry (typically after Year 3 - students then return to complete Year 4).
  • The industry placement helps you develop engineering competence and build useful industrial links prior to graduation.
  • Accredited for professional registration by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. The course meets 4-year study requirement needed for Chartered Engineer (CEng) and the industrial placement year contributes towards the work-based experience needed as evidence when applying for CEng.

Fees

Tuition fees for home/EU students commencing their studies in September 2020 will be £9,250 per annum. Tuition fees for international students will be £24,000 per annum. For general information please see the undergraduate finance pages.

Entry requirements

A-level

Grades AAA in Mathematics, Physics and one other subject.

Practical skills are a crucial part of science education and therefore there will be a requirement to pass the practical element of any science A Level taken.

Where applicants are applying for science and related degrees, this is likely to be made explicit in the offers you will receive.

AS-level

AS level results are not considered as part of the standard admissions process at The University of Manchester.

Unit grade information

The University of Manchester welcomes the provision of unit information where available.  Like all other information provided by applicants this may be taken into consideration when assessing your application.  Unit grades will not normally form part of an offer conditions.

GCSE

Applicants must demonstrate a broad general education including:

Five  GCSES/iGCSES at Grades  A*-C or 9-4

English Language and Mathematics are required at GCSE/iGCSE level with a minimum Grade of  C or  4 . GCSE/iGCSE English Literature will not be accepted in lieu of GCSE/iGCSE English Language.

We will accept two Highers in place of the 3 rd Advanced Higher.

European Baccalaureate

The University of Manchester welcomes applicants with the European Baccalaureate. Acceptable on its own or in combination with other qualifications, applications from students studying for this qualification are welcome and all applicants will be considered on an individual basis.

We normally require: Overall average of 85% in the European Baccalaureate with 85% in Mathematics and Physics and 70% in English Language

AQA Baccalaureate

The University recognises the benefits of the AQA Baccalaureate and the opportunities it provides for applicants to develop independent study and research skills.

In making offers, the University will focus on the three A Levels taken within the AQA Baccalaureate. Students need to check the standard A Level requirements for their chosen course.

The units of broader study, enrichment activities and the Extended Project are considered to be valuable elements of the AQA Baccalaureate and we would therefore strongly encourage students to draw upon these experiences within their personal statement.

Foundation year

Applicants completing the INTO Manchester in partnership with The University of Manchester international foundation programme in Engineering, are required to achieve grades AAA including Mathematics and Physics, and an EAP score of C. 

Applicants completing the NCUK International Foundation year in Engineering are required to achieve AAA including Mathematics and Physics and an EAP requirements score of C.

Applicants studying other Foundation programmes should contact the academic Department to check if their qualification is recognised for entry to this programme and for specific entry requirements.

Access to HE Diploma

We require a QAA-recognised Access to HE Diploma (a minimum of 60 credits overall with at least 45 at Level 3), with merit or distinction in a subject area relevant to the chosen course.

For entry onto this course we would also require an A level in Mathematics at grade A in addition to the HE Diploma.

Cambridge Pre-U

We consider applicants offering Pre-U Principal Subjects, or a mix of Pre-U and A Level subjects, provided a minimum of three distinct subjects overall is taken.

We require grades D3 D3 D3 including Mathematics and Physics.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

The University recognises the benefits of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and the opportunities it provides for applicants to develop independent study and research skills. Although the Extended Project will not be included in the conditions of your offer, we strongly encourage you to provide information about the EPQ in your personal statement and at interview. A number of our academic Departments may also choose to take your performance in the EPQ into account should places be available in August for applicants who narrowly miss the entry grades for their chosen course.

Core Maths

The University welcomes and recognises the value of Level 3 core mathematics qualifications (e.g. AQA Certificate in Mathematical Studies). 

Core Mathematics is not a compulsory element of post-16 study and as a result we will not normally include it in the conditions of any offer made to the student. However, if a student chooses to undertake a core mathematics qualification this may be taken into account when we consider their application, particularly for certain non-science courses with a distinct mathematical or statistical element.

We advise students to contact the academic Department, who will clarify whether their specific portfolio of qualifications is acceptable for entry on to their chosen course.

Home-schooled applicants

If you are a student who has followed a non-standard educational route, e.g. you have been educated at home; your application will be considered against the standard entry criteria of the course for which you are applying. You will be required to demonstrate that you meet the specified academic entry requirements of the course. We will also require a reference from somebody who knows you well enough, in an official capacity, to write about you and your suitability for higher education. English language

All applicants to the University (from the UK and Overseas) are required to show evidence of English Language proficiency.  The minimum English Language requirement for this course is either:

  • GCSE/iGCSE English Language grade C/4, or;
  • IELTS 6.0 overall with no sub-test below 5.5 , or;
  • An acceptable equivalent qualification.

The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) requires that every student from outside the UK and the EU must show evidence of a minimum level of English Language in order to be granted a UK visa (Tier 4 visa) to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level. This level is often referred to as the 'B2 level'.

Additionally, our individual Departments may ask for specific English Language proficiency levels that are necessary for their academic programmes. In most cases these requirements are likely to be higher than the B2 level. Some English Language test results are only valid for two years. Your English Language test report must be valid on the start date of the course.

How your application is considered

All applications are considered on an individual basis once we receive a formal application through UCAS which includes details of the subjects taken and grades achieved, a personal statement, reference and your predicted grades (if you have not yet taken you final examinations).

Interview requirements

We do not hold interviews but UK-based applicants who receive an offer will be invited to a Visit Day, which generally take place on Wednesday afternoons from November - March. This is an opportunity to visit the Department and our facilities and includes a lab tour with current first year students.

Course details

Course description

This course is identical to the Mechanical Engineering MEng, but includes an additional year spent working in industry. 

Many students find it highly beneficial, both to their university education and to their subsequent employability, to integrate a substantial period in industry within your degree. We offer you the chance to do this with a structured placement year in industry, which would normally be completed after the third year of the Mechanical Engineering degree course (with students returning after their placement to complete the 4 th year of study). However, you may opt to organise your placement after the second year.  

During the placement year students are supervised by the host company and progress is monitored by the university.

This course aims to provide the mechanical engineers of the future with an education that covers the breadth of this diverse subject, imparting the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills so that they can operate effectively in their initial appointment and develop their career:

  • Develop strong intellectual and practical skills to critically analyse, investigate and solve mechanical engineering problems;
  • Develop a  high degree of competence in the use and adaptation of existing methods, tools and techniques and the application of engineering principles;
  • Instil creativity in addressing problems relating to engineering components and systems;
  • Develop a high degree of competence in engineering design, experimentation, technologies of manufacturing and effective management of companies;
  • Develop skills in the use of computers, software packages, team working, communication, time management and independent learning;
  • Provide an increased depth and breadth relative to BEng;
  • (through the year in industry) provide knowledge and experience of the practice of mechanical engineering in industry and the operation of engineering companies.

Teaching and learning

The course is taught via a combination of lectures, tutorial classes, practical laboratory sessions and computer-based sessions. There is a design project each year, which involves teamwork in small groups, and allows students to apply and develop their problem-solving and project management skills.  In the third year each student undertakes an individual project, allowing them to pursue a particular subject or application area in greater depth.

Coursework and assessment

Most course units are assessed through an examination (at the end of the semester) and coursework which is undertaken throughout the year.  Parts of the coursework are, in many instances, associated with practical laboratory sessions, whilst others may be based on problem sheets, reports etc. A few subjects, for example Design, are assessed purely on coursework. Course unit details

Key engineering knowledge and skills are taught in a core syllabus throughout all years of the course.

We view design as an especially important activity, as it integrates the engineering topics across the degree course. Years 1 and 2 also include compulsory workshop practice sessions.

Years 3 and 4 also offer a range of options, so that you can select subjects to suit your individual needs, interests and career aspirations.

Options cover many theoretical and practical aspects of industrially relevant topics and include some of the latest developments in mechanical engineering.

An individual research project must be completed in Year 3 and a group design project in Year 4.

Please note: the year out in industry is typically completed after Year 3, with students returning to complete Year 4 of study.

Accrediting organisations

All our  Mechanical Engineering degrees are fully accredited  - Chartered Engineer CEng is the highest professional qualification for engineers. It is recognised internationally and renders you eligible for the European Ingenieur (Eurling) qualification.

The process to become a Chartered Engineer has three stages:

  • 1. The Educational Base (MEng, or BEng with MSc)
  • 2. Initial Professional Development
  • 3. Professional Review
Graduates on this BEng (Hons) course will therefore need further learning equivalent to masters level for Chartered status, via an approved or accredited MSc, transfer to an MEng course, or other further learning, such as part of a structured training programme in the workplace.
