Overview

Have you ever wondered why some people become so successful in life? Have you ever followed an inspirational person and questioned how you could be successful like them?

This unit investigates and explores what makes certain people successful - from all walks of life, such as business, sport and music. Then, through practice and theory, we seek to identify key traits and skills from these inspirational people that can be applied to our everyday lives to make us more successful as individuals.

If you are somebody who never has time to think about where you are going in life, this unit will enable you to assess your own strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, to better understand what is driving you to be the person you could be. You will use this understanding to create a positive Roadmap to reach your goals.

This unit forms part of the Enterprise Challenge.

 

Pre/co-requisites

UCIL units are designed to be accessible to undergraduate students from all disciplines.

UCIL units are credit-bearing and it is not possible to audit UCIL units or take them for additional/extra credits. You must enrol following the standard procedure for your School when adding units outside of your home School.

If you are not sure if you are able to enrol on UCIL units you should contact your School Undergraduate office. You may wish to contact your programme director if your programme does not currently allow you to take a UCIL unit.

Aims

The unit aims to provide an understanding of what is 'inspiration' and why certain people inspire us. Throughout the unit a wide range of inspirational individuals from all walks of life will be studied, with the aim to debate the bigger questions - are inspirational individuals born with the innate sets of characteristics that make them stand out from the crowd or can they be created through education and personal development programmes? If so, can we all become inspirational individuals?

Students will apply their knowledge and understanding to develop their own personal Roadmap to success.

 

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the unit you will be able to:

  • Define the key traits and behaviours that enable people to become inspirational individuals

  • Critically analyse and debate the different theories and methodologies used in research into inspirational individuals

  • Identify and reflect upon your own personal values, motivations and responsibility in the development of individual effectiveness

  • Demonstrate information literacy and effective communication skills by presenting ideas, evidence and arguments clearly, logically and accurately in a range of formats

 

Syllabus

  •  Exploring the notion of inspiration, and inspirational individuals
  • The role of critical thinking
  • The role of mindfulness and its use in decision-making
  • Use and application of research methods
  • Personal development and its application
  • Effective communication and public speaking/presentation skills

 

Teaching and learning methods

The unit will be delivered as a series of 2 hour lectures over 10 weeks, each session will be delivered using a variety of pedagogical techniques using relevant and topical case studies and in-class activities for students to work on either alone or in small informal groups. The lecture will be supported by: - Case Studies, Guest Speakers* as well as reading and research resources which will all be delivered through the units Blackboard site.

Assessment methods

  1. Individual slide-deck: a set of narrated PowerPoint slides,10 slides max (0%)
  2. Group report: contribution to a short business report (approx. 800 words per person) (30%)
  3. Individual report: self-development roadmap (2000 words) (70%)

Feedback methods

Opportunities for feedback from students will be provided through the normal channels. Throughout the unit students will be able to engage with the lecturer within and outside the lecture room. Students will be able to book a meeting with the lecturer during office hours.

Please note that all assessment feedback will be provided within 15 working days of submission. Students are welcome to discuss feedback with the unit tutor, once issued.

Students will also be able to provide feedback through the course unit online survey which will be made available at the end of the course unit.
