Overview

Project work allows students to conduct independent research on a chosen mathematical topic. Third-year students may take one double (two-semester) or up to two single (one-semester) projects.   Students will be individually supervised by a member of academic staff with expertise in the selected topic. The list of project topics varies from year to year and the current suggested topics are located in the final year study module, further details available from the School student intranet under course requirements - projects.

The course unit is an opportunity for students to develop their transferable research, communication and presentation skills by organising and producing a written report and giving a short verbal presentation.

Assessment methods

The final written report is assessed by two independent examiners, the project supervisor and a second member of academic staff. The student must also participate in an oral examination conducted by both examiners during the relevant examination period.

Feedback methods

Students will meet regularly with their project supervisor and receive detailed feedback on a sample of their work. Feedback on the final project will be given during the oral examination. Students undertaking a double (two-semester) project must submit an interim report at the end of the first semester, which will be returned with detailed formative feedback at the start of the second semester.
