Overview

The structure of the course centres on the key areas of organisational psychology, as proposed by the British Psychological Society. This provides students with a broad understanding of the topic, and will be beneficial for any students who might wish to continue towards a career in this area. 

The course will cover topics about: organisational structure and culture; relationships in the workplace; organisational effectiveness; the individual and the work environment; and applications of psychology to the workplace.

 

Aims

The unit aims to:

- Provide students with a firm conceptual foundation in key theoretical perspectives in organisational psychology

- Develop students’ understanding of how these perspectives can be applied in the workplace

- Make students aware of potential career options in organisational psychology and related areas

- Ensure a beneficial learning experience in an area which is likely to affect all those wishing to enter the world of work

 

Teaching and learning methods

This course unit will include 11x  2 hour lectures, 10 x 1 hour seminars and 10 x 1 hour reading group sessions. E-learning provision: Lecture content, supplementary reading and resources, and a monitored discussion board will be provided via Blackboard.

 

Knowledge and understanding

- Analyse the positive and negative effects of the world of work on the individual

- Understand the application of psychology to making positive changes in the workplace

- Understand the different career pathways into Organisational / Occupational psychology

Intellectual skills

-Critically assess the merits of a variety of interventions and applications of psychology

-Synthesise, analyse, and evaluate information using primary sources, including journal articles

-Make a reasoned argument for a particular point of view

Practical skills

-Use library, electronic and on-line resources to research areas of occupational psychology

-Become familiar with some of the psychometric tests used in the workplace

-Plan how to construct a written argument based around appropriate empirical evidence

Transferable skills and personal qualities

-Retrieve information from various sources and evaluate its significance

-Apply scientific research to Organisational / Occupational situations

-Develop their skills in: Synthesising information; summarising theories and evidence; critical thinking; evaluating research; working in groups; communicating effectively both orally and in writing; presenting concise and persuasive arguments

Assessment methods

Coursework Essay - 50%

2 x Exam Essays  - 50%

Feedback methods

Exam - students will receive a grade and can request a summary of their performance after the exam board. 

Coursework essay - a grade and feedback will be provided online (via Blackboard)
