Aims

The course unit aims to provide a basic course in mechanics for students in the Foundation Year.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding: Be familiar with mechanics as applied to static and dynamical situations.

Intellectual skills: Be able to carry out routine operations involving the topics in the syllabus.

Transferable skills and personal qualities: Have a set of tools and methods that can be applied in the courses given in the host department or in subsequent years.

Syllabus

8 lectures: Dynamics I: Newton's Laws for linear motion. Concepts of mass, force, weight momentum, power, kinetic energy, work as an integral. Impulses, collisions, conservation laws, connected particle problems.

8 lectures: Dynamics II: Newton's Law for general motion in vector form. Position, velocity and acceleration vectors. Power and kinetic energy as scalar products. Free motion under uniform gravity. Motion in a circle with constant speed.

6 lectures : Statics: Forces and moments. Particles and rigid bodies under systems of coplanar forces. Laws of friction. Centre of mass.
