Overview

To provide students with additional academic support in the form of laboratory practical classes, seminars and activities taught at the main University campus.

Pre/co-requisites

No prerequisites are required. This unit is only available for students enrolled on the Biosciences with a Foundation Year degree.

Learning outcomes

Students will gain additional expertise in laboratory skills, becoming familiar with equipment and techniques frequently encountered in University laboratories. In addition, students will gain confidence in oral and written communication and in their ability to work as part of a team.

Syllabus

The unit will run over both semesters. Students will be expected to attend sessions at the main University campus as arranged. These sessions will be expected to include:

  • Laboratory practical classes (microbiology, molecular-genetics, predator-prey relationships and human physiology)
  • Seminars
  • Tutorial sessions

Assessment methods

Assessment will be based on marks awarded for satisfactory completion of exercises during tutorial classes and for practical coursework.
