Overview

The practical nature of chemical engineering makes any industrial experience gathered whilst studying an invaluable asset. In the MEng (Hons) Chemical Engineering with Industrial Experience course students spend a year in industry, which allows them to gain such industrial experience. The degree programme complies with the requirements for MEng accreditation by the Institution of Chemical Engineers.  The accredited MEng course includes everything currently covered by a BEng, but with the following additional features:

i.          advanced depth in chemical engineering (deeper penetration of knowledge and understanding than has previously been acquired in the degree programme)

ii.          advanced breadth in chemical engineering (exposure to topics additional to those that would normally be considered as core chemical engineering)

iii.         advanced chemical engineering practice (application of chemical engineering techniques and, if possible, innovative design).

 

As part of the year in industry, the student will conduct significant technical work that is suitable to be written up in the form of a dissertation. Such work can be one coherent project or multiple smaller ones that fit under the same general work area.

 

Aims

The unit aims to:

  • Develop the student’s ability to design, plan and execute technical project(s) during the placement.
  • Clearly describe the placement host company business, strategic aims and future vision, setting the placement in this context.
  • Interrogate industrial problems, including the development of an appropriate methodology.
  • Apply chemical engineering principles to the analysis of industrial problems.
  • Synthesise and obtain viable solutions within an industrial framework and timescale.
  • Communicate the work and its outcomes in a formal, technical report.

 

Learning outcomes

Students will be able to:

ILO: 1 Apply chemical engineering principles to industrial problems encountered during the placement year.

ILO: 2 Formulate objectives for the work, logically relating these to company priorities/strategy.

ILO: 3 Analyse a scientific, engineering or technological problem and develop or select and apply appropriate methods to investigate the problem.

ILO: 4 Gather and analyse suitable data on the scientific or technological problem at hand (dependent on the placement environment).

ILO: 5 Communicate technical work in the form of a formal dissertation.

Teaching and learning methods

Students have learning material available in Blackboard, as well as a discussion group monitored by the module leader.  Direct interactions with industrial supervisors and academic placement supervisors occur during the placement year during which guidance and feedback is provided.
