Overview

Provision of a realistic civil engineering design challenge through a group design project that involves the application of principles from several areas of civil engineering including structures, geotechnics, hydraulics, and management.

Development of individual skills in the researching and the preparation of design details for civil engineering construction. Practice in the use of AutoCAD and other relevant software packages in preparation of general arrangement drawings and detail drawings.

Development of an understanding of civil engineering construction methods, health and safety hazards and the control of risk.

Development of practical skills in site evaluation, data collection, interpretation and analysis, as required for a detailed civil engineering design in an environmentally sensitive area.

Aims

To develop knowledge, skills and understanding relevant to civil engineering design in groups, including construction details, CAD drawing revision, and the collection and analysis of data as required for the planning and execution of a civil engineering design project. 

Syllabus

The project-based unit is supported by a 2 hrs lecture/tutorial per week for 11 weeks, including 2 hr guest lecture from United Utilities, 3 hr tutorial sessions (group meetings with ‘client’) and 1 hr computer-based tutorial sessions. The unit contents comprise introduction to the project brief, introduction of AutoCAD and EDINA, design details, design practice.

Students are required to design a vehicular access connecting two locations (CW1) and to provide a conceptual design of a bridge (CW2). The unit is 100% coursework. To facilitate students, the following topics will be covered

  1. Introduction: an overview of the project brief, unit format, progress and submissions
  2. Tutorial session on AutoCAD and EDINA digital mapping resources
  3. Introduction to general design process
  4. Conceptual design of a bridge with the consideration of site details
  5. Introduction to machinery and construction method statement
  6. Risk assessment and responses strategies
