Fees

Tuition fees for home students commencing their studies in September 2022 will be TBA. Tuition fees for international students will be £26,000 per annum. For general information please see the undergraduate finance pages.

Policy on additional costs

All students should normally be able to complete their programme of study without incurring additional study costs over and above the tuition fee for that programme. Any unavoidable additional compulsory costs totalling more than 1% of the annual home undergraduate fee per annum, regardless of whether the programme in question is undergraduate or postgraduate taught, will be made clear to you at the point of application. Entry requirements

A-level

AAA including Mathematics and either Physics, Electronics, Further Mathematics, Computer Science or Chemistry.

Practical skills are a crucial part of science education and therefore there will be a requirement to pass the practical element of any science A Level taken.

Integrated Foundation Year

If you do not have the required grades or subjects you may want to consider our  integrated foundation year.

Duration of A-level study

If you either sat your examinations early or followed an accelerated curriculum and spent three years studying A-levels where the examinations were taken over two years, your application will be considered against the standard selection process of your chosen course.If you have studied an advanced curriculum where the examinations are spread over three years, consideration for an offer will be at the discretion of the admissions tutor.

AS-level

AS level results are not considered as part of the standard admissions process at The University of Manchester.

Unit grade information

The University of Manchester welcomes the provision of unit information where available.  Like all other information provided by applicants this may be taken into consideration when assessing your application.  Unit grades will not normally form part of an offer conditions.

GCSE

GCSE Maths is required at a minimum of Grade C or above or Grade 4 or above for applicants holding newly reformed GCSEs in England.

GCSE English Language is required at a minimum of Grade B or above or Grade 6 or above for applicants holding newly reformed GCSEs in England.

International Baccalaureate

We accept a range of qualifications from different countries. For these and general requirements including English language see the  accepted entry qualifications from your country .

Scottish requirements

We require grades AAABB in Scottish Highers including Mathematics and either Physics or Chemistry.  In addition, 2 Scottish Advanced Highers are normally required at grades AA including Mathematics and either Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics for Mechanics.

 Mathematics not taken at Higher/Advanced Higher must have been achieved at SCQF level 5 (minimum National 5 grade C / Intermediate 2 grade C / Standard Grade Credit level grade 3).

 English Language not taken at Higher/Advanced Higher must have been achieved at SCQF level 5 (minimum National 5 grade B / Intermediate 2 grade B / Standard Grade 2).

European Baccalaureate

The University of Manchester welcomes applicants with the European Baccalaureate. Acceptable on its own or in combination with other qualifications, applications from students studying for this qualification are welcome and all applicants will be considered on an individual basis.

We normally require: Award of European Baccalaureate with 75% overall, including 8 in Maths and 8 in either Physics or Chemistry.

AQA Baccalaureate

The University recognises the benefits of the AQA Baccalaureate and the opportunities it provides for applicants to develop independent study and research skills.

We expect to see grades AAA in the GCE A-Levels including subjects Maths and either Physics, Electronics, Further Maths or Chemistry.

The units of broader study, enrichment activities and the Extended Project are considered to be valuable elements of the AQA Baccalaureate and we would therefore strongly encourage students to draw upon these experiences within their personal statement.

Foundation year

The University recognises a number of foundation programmes as suitable for entry to this undergraduate programme:

Applicants completing the INTO Manchester in partnership with The University of Manchester international foundation programme in Science and Engineering or the NCUK International Foundation year in Science and Engineering are required to achieve grades A*AA including Maths and either Physics or Further Maths and EAP grade A or above.

Pearson BTEC qualifications

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma

In addition to the following requirements applicants are required to provide AS Level Maths at grade B or above. BTEC Extended Diploma in  Electrical and Electronic Engineering  with Distinction*, Distinction, Distinction including Distinction in Further Engineering Mathematics. Applicants are also required to pass an interview. If you are studying the general Engineering stream please contact the admissions office to request a full list of the units we require.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma

We consider the National Diploma for entry provided it is in  Electrical and Electronic Engineering .  Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full National Diploma with grades D*D plus A Level Mathematics at grade A. Applicants are also required to pass an interview. If you are studying the general Engineering stream please contact the admissions office to request a full list of the units we require.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma

We consider the National Foundation Diploma for entry. Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full National Foundation Diploma with grade D plus two A-Levels at grades AA. A-Levels must include Mathematics and one from Physics, Electronics, Chemistry, Computer Science or Further Maths.

Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate

We consider the National Extended Certificate for entry. Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full National Extended Certificate with grade D plus two A-Levels at grades AA. A-Levels must include Mathematics and one from Physics, Electronics, Chemistry, Computer Science or Further Maths.

OCR Cambridge Technical qualifications

Cambridge Level 3 Technical Extended Diploma (CTEC)

We consider the Technical Extended Diploma in Engineering for entry provided an additional Mathematics A-Level is also obtained. Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Technical Extended Diploma with grades  D*DD  and Mathematics A-Level at grade  B.

Cambridge Level 3 Technical Diploma (CTEC)

We consider the Technical Diploma in Engineering for entry provided an additional Mathematics A-Level is also obtained. Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Technical Diploma with grades   DD  plus a Mathematics A Level at grade  A.

Cambridge Level 3 Technical Foundation Diploma (CTEC)

We consider the Technical Foundation Diploma for entry. Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Technical Foundation Diploma with grades   DD   plus additional level 3 qualifications A Level Mathematics and Physics at grade  AA. 

Cambridge Level 3 Technical Extended Certificate (CTEC)

We consider the Technical Extended Certificate for entry.  Entry requirements are based on achievement of the full Technical Extended Certificate with grade    plus additional Level 3 qualifications such as A Levels Mathematics and Physics at grades  AA  . 

Access to HE Diploma

Applications are considered on an individual basis, we will look carefully at previous academic history, an academic reference and life experience and skills. Following an initial assessment applicants may be invited to attend an academic interview to add supplementary information and determine if we can make a standard offer.

The standard offer will be conditional based on the Access to HE Diploma in an Engineering related discipline with 60 credits with 45 at Level 3. A minimum of 45 credits at Distinction, 15 of which should be in Maths.

In addition we also require GCSE in English language at grade B/Grade 6 in the newly reformed GCSEs in England.

Cambridge Pre-U

The Cambridge PreU is acceptable with three principle units including Maths and either Physics, Further Maths or Chemistry with three Distinction 3 grades.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

The University recognises the benefits of the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) and the opportunities it provides for applicants to develop independent study and research skills. Although the Extended Project will not be included in the conditions of your offer, we strongly encourage you to provide information about the EPQ in your personal statement and at interview. A number of our academic Departments may also choose to take your performance in the EPQ into account should places be available in August for applicants who narrowly miss the entry grades for their chosen course.

Core Maths

The University welcomes and recognises the value of Level 3 core mathematics qualifications (e.g. AQA Certificate in Mathematical Studies). 

Core Mathematics is not a compulsory element of post-16 study and as a result we will not normally include it in the conditions of any offer made to the student. However, if a student chooses to undertake a core mathematics qualification this may be taken into account when we consider their application, particularly for certain non-science courses with a distinct mathematical or statistical element.

We advise students to contact the academic Department, who will clarify whether their specific portfolio of qualifications is acceptable for entry on to their chosen course.

Home-schooled applicants

If you are a student who has followed a non-standard educational route, e.g. you have been educated at home; your application will be considered against the standard entry criteria of the course for which you are applying. You will be required to demonstrate that you meet the specified academic entry requirements of the course. We will also require a reference from somebody who knows you well enough, in an official capacity, to write about you and your suitability for higher education. If you are a home schooled student and would like further information or advice please contact the academic department for your chosen course who will be able to help you. 

Non-standard educational routes

Mature students are some of our most well-equipped learners, bringing skills and attributes gained from work, family and other life experiences.  Students come from a whole array of backgrounds, study every kind of course, undertake full-time and part-time learning and are motivated by career intentions as well as personal interest.  There is no such thing as a typical mature student at Manchester.  The application process is the same as for other prospective undergraduates.  If you require further clarification about the acceptability of the qualifications you hold please contact the academic department(s) you plan to apply to.  Further information for mature students can be found here ( http://www.manchester.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/mature-students/ )

English language

All applicants to the University (from the UK and Overseas) are required to show evidence of English Language proficiency.  The minimum English Language requirement for this course is either:

  • GCSE/iGCSE English Language grade B/6.
  • IELTS 7.0 overall with no sub-test below 6.5 and 7.0 in speaking.
  • TOEFL iBT:100 overall with 25 in each sub-test.
  • Pearson Test of Academic English: 76 overall with 76 in Speaking and no subtest below 70.
  • Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) (C1 Advanced) or (CPE) (C2 Proficiency) with an overall score of 185, including 185 in Speaking and a minimum of 176 in all other sub scores.
  • An acceptable equivalent qualification.

Please note that if you hold English as a second language iGCSE qualification, we may also require you to take one of our acceptable equivalent English Language qualifications or achieve a higher grade in your iGCSE than the one stated above. Please contact the academic School for clarification.

The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) requires that every student from outside the UK must evidence a minimum level of English Language in order to be granted a UK student visa to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level. This level is often referred to as the 'B2 level'.

Additionally, our individual Schools may ask for specific English Language proficiency levels that are necessary for their academic programmes. In most cases these requirements are likely to be higher than the B2 level. English language test validity

Some English Language test results are only valid for two years. Your English Language test report must be valid on the start date of the course.

Advice to applicants

We would normally only consider applicants who obtained the relevant qualification within the two years prior to entry. Applicants who have left education for more than two years would normally be recommended to take an Access course. Please contact the Admissions Office to discuss your particular circumstances. You should not usually apply for more than one of the courses offered by The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering.  Students can switch between Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Electronic Engineering and Mechatronic Engineering up until the end of the first year.

Applicants submitting mitigating circumstances. Mitigating circumstances may be personal or family illness, other family circumstances, change of teachers during a course, problems with school facilities or an unusual curriculum followed by your Department or college. We recommend that information on mitigating circumstances that have affected or are likely to affect your academic performance will be included in the referee's report. We cannot usually take into account information that is supplied after an adverse decision has been made on an application by the admitting Department. If you encounter mitigating circumstances after you have submitted your application, please inform the admissions staff in the Department to which you applied as soon as possible.  Where mitigating circumstances have already been taken into account, for example by the relevant Exam Board, we will not be able to make further allowances.

How your application is considered

Applications are considered on the basis of an assessment of past and predicted academic achievements, the academic reference and personal statement. 

The personal statement is your opportunity to tell the admissions team why we should offer you a place here at Manchester. It will be read by an administrative member of staff.

We are keen to hear about you - your interests, hobbies, extra-curricular experiences, career aspirations - and how these have prepared you for success on your chosen course.

All applicants should be aware that information provided in the personal statement may be used as the basis for further discussion during any subsequent interview with an academic member of staff.

Deferrals

Applicants for deferred entry are considered equally to other applications up to the point of confirmation. Deferred entry is granted on the discretion of admissions staff, and is normally granted for one year.

Some English language test results, such as IELTS or TOEFL, are only valid for two years from the test date.

Policy for applicants who resit their qualifications

If you have re-sat individual modules to improve your grades, we will consider your application according to the standard selection process. If you are planning to re-sit the final Year 13 examinations, or have already done so, the University will consider your application, but we may require further information in order to make an informed judgment on your application.

Re-applications

If you applied in the previous year and your application was not successful you may apply again. Your application will be considered against the standard course entry criteria for that year of entry.  In your new application you should demonstrate how your application has improved.  We may draw upon all information from your previous applications or any previous registrations at the University as a student when assessing your suitability for your chosen course. 

If you are applying for a place for the same year of entry through UCAS Extra, you should provide additional evidence of your suitability for the course. If you are applying through clearing you are required to meet the clearing requirements. In both UCAS Extra and clearing the places will be subject to availability.

Transfers

We are unable to accept applications for second year entry with the exception of those coming via our advanced entry programmes with North China Electric Power University, Shanghai University or NCUK.

Please note we do not offer transfers into the third year of our courses.

We live in an information age. Complex systems require digital signal processing (for images, audio and other signals), and technological developments in communications include concurrent processing (to allow the manipulation of the massive amounts of data), data networking and digital communication systems for both local distribution and across the internet. The paid industrial placement will increase your depth and breadth of electronic engineering knowledge, and provide valuable practical work experience strengthening your expertise and your CV. 

Regular, close support

During your first year, you will be supported by course unit-specific tutors who will hold weekly small-group sessions to discuss questions related to your course units. Additionally, you will be able to engage with our award-winning Peer Assisted Study Session scheme  which allows you to interact with some of our 2nd and 3rd Year students. You will also be assigned an Academic Advisor, who will offer you support in terms of your academic progression and career development.

Excellent facilities

With access to an extensive range of leading facilities , you will get hands-on with industry-standard equipment - improving your knowledge and skills, and preparing you for work post-graduation. Our flagship facilities include a new High Voltage Lab , Photon Science Institute, and the brand new teaching and research engineering  buildings .

Options and flexibility

The first three semesters of our undergraduate courses share the same fundamental engineering contents. This gives you the opportunity to transfer between electrical and electronic, electronic and mechatronic engineering up until halfway through your second year.

Teaching and learning

In your first year of study there is approximately a 50:50 split between your contact time and independent study; about the same as when studying for A-levels.

In subsequent years this split changes to a greater amount of independent learning, with the split being approximately 30:70 in the third year. This does not mean that less help is available; our staff are here to help.

Contact time could be in a lecture, example class, tutorial, laboratory class and sometimes may be online (email/e-learning/web blog etc). All of these activities enable you to interact with us to ensure you have the best possible learning experience.

The course contains strong practical elements: a year-long practical build project of an electronic device in Year 1, a year-long practical build project of an autonomous embedded system in Year 2, and a year-long practical research project in Year 3. During your year in industry, an academic supervisor will ensure that your activity is strongly related with your degree and you will have the opportunity to spend a year working on engineering projects in an industrial setting.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment of most course units is by examination combined with an element of course work, such as marked laboratory work or marked examples. Substantial projects are assessed by written reports, presentations and demonstrations.

Overview of the year in industry

The year in industry provides a valuable opportunity to experience work as an engineer in real world situations within a commercial UK based company. Students will have the opportunity to contribute to engineering products that will influence the future development of society, and undertaking a year in industry increases the likelihood of securing a job offer after graduation.

Aims of year in industry

  • Provide practical experience of engineering, which may contribute to the engineering practice qualification for IET membership
  • Provide the experience of holding responsibilities associated with industrial employment
  • Provide the opportunity to develop and enhance key soft skills required to work in a team structure  
  • Provide the opportunity to consolidate a technical education with that of the engineering environment
  • Provide a platform to encourage the transformation from student to engineer

Learning outcomes

The year in industry has been designed taking into consideration the requirements of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). This year may be included as a part of the years of experience that together with the academic qualifications allow students to become Chartered Engineers (CEng).

There are four outcomes we want to develop:

  1. The ability to understand and analyse engineering challenges.
  2. The ability to apply engineering techniques to industrial challenges.
  3. To provide technical or commercial guidance, knowledge-sharing or leadership to peers or assistants.
  4. To demonstrate effective interpersonal presentation and technical writing skills.

Teaching and learning methods

Twice during the period in industry you will be visited by your Academic Supervisor. The visits allows us to confirm that the learning outcomes are being met and that you are happy within your placement. 

Assessment methods

Assessment takes place throughout the placement. You are required to submit a preparatory report and deliver a preparatory presentation, and also a final report and final presentation.

Your academic tutor will complete two visits and supply feedback on your submissions.

Final Presentation: 30%
