Overview

The course unit will introduce and discuss the following content areas:

* the role and history of management theory

* management theory; models and perspectives

* management theory case studies

* the role of the manager

It will also

      * apply academic theory to the role of the manager in a work-based context

And, build planning and research skills in preparation for

* the Applied Study Management Interview.

Aims

This unit aims to:

* Provide foundational understanding of contending management theory.

* Discuss the implications of management theory for business and the leisure sector.

* Apply management theory to the role of the manager in a work-based context.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the unit, students should be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

Identify, analyse and evaluate contending management theory and practice.

Use the Applied Study Management Interview to identify, analyse and evaluate management theory and practice from the perspective of a manager in a work- based context.

Intellectual skills

Analyse and evaluate contending management theory in an essay submission.

Analyse and evaluate management theory and practice from the perspective of a manager in a work based context, in a written report and by oral presentation.

Plan and prepare research interview questions for the Applied Study Management Interview.

Practical skills

Source, plan and organise the Applied Study Management Interview.

Conduct the Applied Study Management interview and collect manager responses as primary data.

Transferable skills and personal qualities

Report the key findings of the Applied Study Management Interview.

Present the key findings of the Applied Study Management Interview.

Demonstrate appropriate work-based communication skills (written and oral)

Demonstrate networking skills as an aid to subsequent Applied Study Period planning.

Assessment methods

One essay assignment: 2,000 words (50%)

One ASMI evaluation report:1,000 words (30%)

One ASMI oral presentation/Q&A: 10 minutes (20%)
