Overview
This unit provides a combination of structured weekly input to develop study and research skills and a field trip experience which gives students the opportunity to apply those skills to a particular area of management, leadership and leisure studies. The field trip allows students to consider issues arising from the management of leisure facilities and staff in the countryside, apply appropriate research methods, and communicate results. The trip works alongside external organizations and much of the content is drawn from lectures and demonstrations given by them.
To build students’ confidence in undertaking and managing their studies, the unit develops their ability to work effectively within an online learning environment (BlackBoard) and to access and manage digital library resources. It provides structured support in reading research, in developing an understanding of academic writing (voice, interaction with sources, academic conventions, avoiding plagiarism), and in developing effective approaches to the writing process. At the assignment grading stage in week 8, students who are not yet working at a passing level of 2ii or above are offered further small group or individual tutorials to develop their confidence.
