Overview

This unit will introduce you to the core clinical skills required for professional midwifery practice and familiarise you with the support networks available within the clinical learning environment. The unit will enable you to gain knowledge and confidence in basic midwifery skills. Within the clinical learning environment you will be further supported to develop these skills by participating in the provision of maternity care across the pregnancy continuum. Throughout this unit you will learn through a variety of approaches, including taught sessions both face-face and online. This includes lectures, small group work, practical skills-based workshops, clinical simulation, e-learning, podcasts, and practice based learning in the clinical environment.

Aims

The unit aims to:

  • enable learners to apply their acquired theory of professional midwifery practice in clinical situations under the direct supervision and direction of qualified health professionals.
  • support learners to develop their understanding of clinical practice through reflection.

Teaching and learning methods

The intended learning outcomes (ILOs) and aims are all constructively aligned to ensure the teaching and assessment methods support the learners’ achievement of these to the highest standard. The assessment ensures that all aims and ILOs can be demonstrated as met during the assessment task and in order to facilitate learners’ understanding of the ILOs the following teaching methods will be used:

Knowledge and understanding

  • Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of the midwives’ role as a skilled practitioner across the childbearing continuum.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of key health and safety issues related to clinical practice, including moving and handling, infection control and basic life support.
  • Understand the principles and rationale for accurate record keeping, appropriately sharing findings and escalating concerns.
  • Demonstrate clear knowledge and understanding of the best-practice infection control measures employed in the clinical environment.

Intellectual skills

Use reflection to evaluate own skills development and professional practice related to the provision of care across the childbearing continuum.

Practical skills

  • Demonstrate professional behaviour by enacting NHS England’s 6 Cs.
  • Participate in planning, implementing and evaluating plans of care in partnership with individuals and families to anticipate and prevent complications.
  • Demonstrate appropriate principles and skills regarding infection prevention and control, following local and national policies and protocols.

Transferable skills and personal qualities

  • Demonstrate professional accountability and reflect on their own performance.
  • Demonstrate through participation in student midwife continuity of carer the ability to build kind, trusting, and respectful relationships and work in partnership with women/people across the childbearing continuum.
  • Ability to communicate and share information with women and their families with respect, kindness and compassion, and conduct person-centred conversations that promote health across the life-course.
