Overview

Matrices and algebraic properties. Definition of determinant and properties. Identity, diagonal, transpose, upper/lower triangular and inverse matrices.

Solving systems of linear equations through Gaussian Elimination. Solving systems of nonlinear equations using the Newton-Raphson method.

First order ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Analytical solution by separation of variables and by the integrating factor.

Laplace transforms. Transforms and inverse transforms of functions. Transforms of derivatives. Application to solution of ordinary differential equations.

Numerical solution of ODEs and systems of ODEs using Euler and Runge-Kutta Methods.

Aims

The unit aims to:

Provide the background mathematics and IT skills required for subsequent chemical engineering courses in mathematically oriented topics. Engineering applications are to be introduced where relevant.

Learning outcomes

ILO: 1Recall definitions and facts relevant to syllabus topics.

ILO 2:Preform routine calculations using the syllabus topics.

ILO 3:Use the methods mentioned in the syllabus topics in order to carry out quantitative problem-solving.

ILO 4:Implement numerical methods computationally.

ILO 5: Develop critical thinking around the application of techniques in a Chemical Engineering context and in relation to syllabus

Teaching and learning methods

Lectures provide fundamental aspects supporting the critical learning of the module and will be delivered as pre-recorded asynchronous short videos via our virtual learning environment.

Synchronous sessions will support the lecture material with Q&A and problem-solving sessions where you can apply the new concepts. Surgery hours are also available for drop-in support.

Feedback on problems and examples, feedback on coursework and exams, and model answers will also be provided through the virtual learning environment. A discussion board provides an opportunity to discuss topics related to the material presented in the module.

Students are expected to expand the concepts presented in the session and online by additional reading (suggested in the Online Reading List) in order to consolidate their learning process and further stimulate their interest to the module.

Study budget:

  • Core Learning Material (e.g. recorded lectures, problem solving sessions): 24 hours
  • Self-Guided Work (e.g. continuous assessment, extra problems, reading)     : 44 hours
  • Exam Style Assessment Revision and Preparation: 32 hours
