Analogue and Digital Communications

Background and fundamentals section
Signal spectrum, Fourier analysis, PSD, ESD and Wiener-Kitchen relationship, Parseval’s theorem, linear time invariant channels, and equalisation.
Analog modulation techniques
Amplitude modulation, frequency, phase modulation and demodulation techniques. Bandwidth definition. Examples of phase and frequency modulation transceiver, superhetrodyne receiver, frequency division multiplexing, time division multiplexing.
Baseband signalling and detection
Sampling theorem, quantization, binary pulse code modulation, m-ary code modulation, properties and spectral occupancies, matched filter detection.
Digital modulation techniques
Sampling theorem, pulse shaping theorem, Binary and M-ary generic digital modulation techniques such as amplitude (ASK), phase (PSK) and frequency (FSK) modulation and demodulation and combinations of (APSK). BER graph reading and relations to SER.

The course unit aims to:
Introduce the students to a wide range of fundamental communication concepts and techniques using example applications from contemporary communication systems.
The following Intended Learning Outcomes are all developed and assessed. On the successful completion of the course, students will be able to perform:

ILO 2: Understand the process of transmission through linear time invariant systems.
ILO 3: Describe fundamental types of analogue and digital modulation techniques.
ILO 4: Apply various fundamental concepts in digital communication systems
ILO 5: Design basic forms of frequency and time division multiple access techniques.
